SCOPA Meeting Minutes

Announcements
The Orientation for New Librarians went well. Attendance was good and next year we will work more closely with Library Administrative Services to ensure consistency in the scheduling of this meeting.Staff Training and Organizational Development Committee is sponsoring a Learning Fair on May 24, 2001 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the SML Lecture Hall. Richard Boursy of the subcommittee for SCOPA Grants will create a brochure which will describe the guidelines for applicants for SCOPA Grants. Jae Williams will dry mount the SCOPA logo for signage. Stephanie Schmitt and Rochelle Smith will split coverage responsibilities for representation of the Mentoring Program. Members from the Grants subcommittee and the Mentoring subcommittee should be present at the Learning Fair as much as possible. All members of SCOPA should volunteer to cover the SCOPA table sometime during the Learning Fair.
Forums
The SCOPA Grants Forum will be held on Thursday, April 19, 2001, beginning at 3:00 p.m.. The forum will be held in the SML Lecture Hall.Audrey Novak and Scott Bennett will speak on the Orbis2 Project on Monday, April 30, 2001 from 3-4:30 p.m. The forum will be held in the SML Lecture Hall.
John Pull is scheduled to speak at a forum scheduled for May 22, 2001. The exact time is still being negotiated. John Pull has worked on digitization projects for the American Memory Project and has specialized in working with ephemera.
Raquel Cogell, Yale's first Librarian in Residence, is scheduled to speak on June 5, 2001, from 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. She will discuss her book Diversity in Libraries: Academic Residency Programs (due out in July). Other participants include Mary Tao, currently a Librarian in Residence, Pamela Mann, currently a Librarian in Residence, and Obianuju Mollel, Reference Librarian at the Medical Library. Diane Turner may introduce the speakers, but this will be determined later.
Scott Bennett's farewell talk to the library staff is scheduled for July 11, 2001. His last day is thought to be July 31, 2001.
A Grants Writing Workshop is in the works and is to be scheduled for the fall. Possibilities include someone from the University of Michigan who was formerly with the National Endowment for the Humanities. . Jock Reynolds from the Yale Art Gallery is being considered for a possible fall forum.
The Born Digital Forum is scheduled for Wednesday, May 30, 2001. Our speakers will be Paul Conway (Mellon Grant), Tim Young (Digital Strategies at the Beinecke Library), Anne Marie Phillips (Records Management), Susan Williams (Artwork and Original Digital Images), and Ann Green (Social Science Data).
The forum on Scholarly Editing Projects at Yale is in the works. The Editing Projects include: the Boswell Papers, the Ben Franklin Collection, the Parliamentary Papers, and the Jonathan Edwards Papers.
A forum on Digitization Projects at Yale cosponsored with the Library Systems Office is in the works. Ellen Doon, Michelle Light, and Stephanie Schmitt will meet with Audrey Novak and others from the Library Systems Office to work out the details. This forum will be scheduled in the month of August 2001 and may be held at the Beinecke Library.
Other Business
A discussion about scheduling summer meetings took place. SCOPA will meet once a month during June, July, and August. Due to Memorial Day, SCOPA will meet on June 4th instead of May 29th.Next Meeting
SCOPA's next meeting is scheduled for April 30, 2001. This meeting will be shorter than normal so that the members can attend the Orbis2 Forum beginning at 3:00 p.m. in the Sterling Lecture Hall.Submitted by Stephanie Schmitt, April 18, 2001
