SCOPA Meeting Minutes
2 April 2001
Present: Ellen Doon (chair), Richard Boursy, Cindy Crooker, Calvin Hsu (recording), Michelle Light, Step Schmitt and Rochelle Smith
Staff Learning Fair SCOPA has been asked to participate in a 'Learning Fair' that the STOD committee is organizing in SML lecture hall on May 24 from 10 am-3. Members agreed that SCOPA's participation would be valuable, and agreed to share responsibility manning the table. Brochures for the mentoring program and copies of the "guidelines for applicants" for SCOPA's grant program were thought to be ideal pamphlets to have on the table.
New Librarians Orientation Five new librarians have confirmed to attend the Orientation on April 5, 9:30-11 am. Speakers have been notified, information packets for attendees have been prepared, and food is scheduled to arrive at 9 am on Thursday. Members were requested by the Chair to arrive early and stay on later to answer questions. In addition, members were encouraged to share own experiences with new librarians, preferably with no acronyms. Step will mention about the informal Journal Club during the orientation.
Forums
- SCOPA Grant Reports
Cynthia reported that 3 out of the 4 groups of recipients agreed to make presentations on April 19, 3 pm.- Grant Writing Workshop
Michelle is trying to get local speakers through the New Haven Public Library. As an alternative, she will contact someone she knows with prior experience at NHPRC.- Other forums
Ellen reported that Jae had secured John Pull of LC to give a presentation in May on LC's "American Memory" project. Should the issue of honorarium come up, Ellen hopes that $100 would be an acceptable amount, given the relatively small budget of SCOPA. The academic residency forum is on schedule. Scott's farewell address is set for July 11, in the afternoon. Audrey will talk about Orbis 2 in late April.- Summer Series (aka "Local Information Series")
The Summer Series is taking shape: the first session on born digital materials will take place in May. The second session on scholarly editing projects at the library--the Franklin Papers, the Boswell Papers, etc., is scheduled for July or August. The third session on digitization projects is still in development and is tentatively scheduled for September. There will be a separate forum on the Mellon project to preserve Elsevier electronic journals when it is nearer to completion in the fall. Other institutions participating in the grant may be invited to participate in that forum, if it takes place. While waiting for the scheduled A/V demonstration, Richard gave a brief account of a digitizing project conducted by the Music Department for course materials.
At 2:45 pm, committee members went down to the Lecture Hall, where Jeongmin demonstrated procedures for setting up the overhead projector and other A/V equipments.
Meeting was adjourned at 3.
Respectfully submitted,
Calvin
