SCOPA Meeting Minutes
30 April 2001
Present were Ellen Doon, Cindy Crooker, Stephanie Schmitt, Calvin Hsu, Diane Turner, Jae Williams, Richard Boursy and Rochelle Smith.
There were no formal announcements except that Jae Williams and Stephanie Schmitt will not be able to assist in staffing the SCOPA table at the STOD learning fair.
John Pull from the Library of Congress will be speaking on the American Memory Project on May 22 at 3pm. Lunch is scheduled for before his talk, possibly with Scott Bennett and the associate university librarians.
Raquel Cogell will be the featured speaker at SCOPA's forum on minority librarian in residence programs on June 5 from 10.30 to 12am. Other speakers: Mary Tao and Pamela Mann, Yale's two current librarians in residence, and Uju Mollel, who participated in Cornell's program. There are plans for lunch with Scott Bennett and the AULs before this forum as well.
The "Born Digital" forum has been confirmed for May 30; Jennifer Weintraub will moderate.
SCOPA's digitization symposium will be cosponsored with the systems office, and will be held in August or September with the Beinecke as a possible venue. The head of the Digital Library Federation is first choice as keynote speaker.
Scott Bennett's farewell talk is still scheduled for July 11.
A forum on scholarly editing projects at Yale is in the planning stages.
Bill Wallach's grantwriting workshop has been confirmed for September. Michelle is working on this.
Jock Reynolds will give a talk on November 29 at 3pm. Possibly titled "To Conserve a Legacy", the talk will focus on preservation efforts for the art collections of historically black colleges.
The STOD Committee's staff learning fair takes place on May 24. SCOPA plans to have printouts of its publications page available in addition to general informational brochures and flyers for the mentoring and grants programs.
The possibility of scheduling talks by Alice Prochaska and Barbara Shailor, perhaps in conjunction with a welcoming reception, was raised. Timing may be a challenge since their respective start dates are August 1 and July 1. An ideal time would be one where most staff are not vacationing or at conferences but before the fall semester gets into full swing.
Ellen asked that the publications and mentoring program be highlighted on YULIB-L at least quarterly (perhaps January, April, July, and October), since they are newer SCOPA endeavors and awareness about them needs to be improved.
