December 10, 2001
Present: Ellen Doon (chair), Richard Boursy, Cynthia Crooker (recording), Todd Fell, Pamela Mann, Rochelle Smith, Jae Williams.
FORUMS:
Tomorrow, December 11th at 3:00 p.m., Kris Hammond of the Intelligent Information Laboratory at Northwestern University will give a talk entitled "Theory and Practice of Needles and Haystacks: Stories from the InfoLab." [Forum was postponed at the last minute and will be rescheduled for early 2002.]Cesar Zapata is trying to reschedule the Orbis2 forum featuring Audrey Novak and the chairs of the implementation committees. [This forum is tentatively scheduled for Jan. 9 at 2:30.]
On January 11, 2002 at 10:30 a.m., Hugh Cobbe of the British Library will give a talk entitled "Gifts, Purchases, the Lottery, and the Treasury: Some Personal Reflections on 25 years of Music Acquisitions at the British Library." Todd is the contact person for this forum.
The second forum in the "Librarians Without Borders" series will probably be in late January after ALA and will feature Kimberly Parker and Uju Mollel. Tanja Lorkovic and Rich Richie will be making new trips abroad and would prefer to speak after they get back. Kim attended a World Health Organization meeting in Geneva concerning electronic access to medical journals in countries that cannot afford subscriptions. Uju gave a workshop on health information at a conference on women's issues in Madagascar. Rochelle is the contact person for this series.
Elaine Koretsky’s forum on the history of paper has been scheduled for April 3, 2002.
Other forums in development:
· Barbara Shailor, Director of the Beinecke Library, sometime in late March or April.
· Scholarly editing projects in the library: Franklin, Boswell, Edwards, & Parliamentary Papers (Todd is the contact person)Other forum possibilities:
· James Welbourne, NHFPL Director, in coordination with an M&PSA nooks & crannies tour
· Mellon grant: the collaboration of Yale with Elsevier on an electronic journal archive project (Ann Okerson, David Gewirtz); we would like to invite representatives from other institutions and publishers to speak about their portions of the project. Ellen suggested asking Ann Okerson to advise us on this.PROGRAMS:
Grants (Cindy): We had fewer applicants this year, which may be attributed to the number of staff (including systems staff) working on the Voyager implementation and Alice Prochaska’s Goals Groups.
Mentoring (Rochelle): There hasn’t been much demand for mentors so far, but the structure is in place for anyone who wants one. Asking for a mentor is somewhat politically delicate, since it might be perceived as an implicit criticism of one’s supervisor.
Publications Page (Jae): The formatting has been made more consistent and looks more professional. New entries will be solicited quarterly.
Budget (Ellen): We have approximately $1200 left in our account for this year (because of what's been happening with the airline industry since September 11, we spent far less on airfare than we budgeted for speakers Wallach and Hammond). This will roll over into next year's budget. Even after the grant allocations for 2002 have been set aside from next year's funds, there will be a considerable amount left to spend on forums and other programs. Ellen will write the annual report and submit it to Diane Turner.
Next meeting: The transitional meeting is tentatively scheduled for Monday afternoon, December 17th. The current members will be joined by Diane Turner, Alice Prochaska, and the newly appointed members. [The meeting occurred at 3:00 on Dec. 17]
