SCOPA Meeting Summary
Transition Meeting, 4 January 2001
Present: Richard Boursy, Cynthia Crooker, Ellen Doon (Incoming Chair), Tom Hyry (Outgoing Chair), Michelle Light, Stephanie Schmitt, Rochelle Smith, Diane Turner, Jennifer Williams.
Guest: Scott Bennett
Absent: Erika Heinen, Calvin Hsu, Dajin Sun.
Diane Turner welcomed new members and at her suggestion introductions were made. She thanked Tom for his service as Chair, and thanked outgoing members for a job well done, noting that the work of SCOPA over the last year set a high mark for the future.
Scott Bennett said that he believes SCOPA and the work it does makes the Yale University Library a better, more interesting place to work.
Tom Hyry gave a report of the accomplishments and achievements of SCOPA over the past year. He thanked outgoing and continuing members for the work they have done.
Outgoing members, Diane Turner and Scott Bennett left the room.
The meeting continued. Ellen welcomed new members, and outlined SCOPA's programs and the work it does throughout the year.
Cindy will serve as Chair of the Grants Subcommittee, with Ellen as the other continuing member. Two new SCOPA members will be given the opportunity to volunteer to serve on the Grants Subcommittee at the next meeting.
Step will serve as the Mentoring Program Liaison, and will be assisted by an incoming member. At a future meeting the committee will discuss ways of improving and better publicizing this program.
Two other positions to be filled by either new or continuing members are:
SCOPA Website Manager.
Publication List Liaison. All SCOPA members, continuing and incoming, were encouraged to consider volunteering for these at the next meeting.
Forums:
The upcoming forum with Ann Okerson and her colleagues from the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Information Technology Strategy for the Library of Congress, originally scheduled for Jan 23 or 24, will have to be rescheduled because of a conflict with one of the speaker's teaching schedule. Ellen will continue to work on it, aiming for February 5, and report on progress at the next meeting.
Unrealized forum ideas from the past year include:
Wendy Lougee, Associate Director for Digital Initiatives, University of Michigan Library. She had to cancel her participation in SCOPA's Fall Series on Scholarly Electronic Publishing because of laryngitis, but might be invited again to speak on her own.
Kris Hammond, Northwestern University's Intelligent Information Laboratory. Suggested as a speaker by Alan Solomon for early in the Spring semester if possible.
"Summer Series"-- the idea of "state of department" information sharing reports from groups of 3-4 Yale Librarians from related disciplines, followed by panel discussions about what's new in, for instance, arts librarianship, or what interesting projects are underway in the Science libraries. These sessions need not be presented as a coherent series, but can stand alone.
New ideas:
Cindy suggested a grants writing workshop, to be led, possibly, by an outside instructor.
In addition:
Scott Bennett will no doubt agree to give a speech before he leaves his post as University Librarian in August, and may speak before then on the State of the Library, as he has done regularly for SCOPA in the past.
All SCOPA members were encouraged to think of ideas for forums before next meeting's brainstorming session.
Regular Meeting time established:
Every other Monday, 2:00-3:00 p.m.
--Jae offered the use of the Arts of the Book Collection as a meeting space if necessary.
--Cindy suggested that we confirm the first meeting for January 22 only after the schedule for the ExLibris demo has been publicized, in case there is a session SCOPA members would like to attend that will conflict with the meeting.AGENDA ITEMS FOR THE NEXT MEETING, 22 JANUARY from 2:00-3:00 p.m.:
