SCOPA Meeting Minutes
September 17, 2001
Present were Ellen Doon, Pamela Mann, Cynthia Crooker, Jae Williams, Richard Boursy, Todd Fell, Stephanie Schmitt, and Rochelle Smith.
The Digital Projects Symposium is being held on Thursday September 20, from 9.00 to 1.00 in the Beinecke lecture space. Security coverage for the room in which the presenters' laptops will be housed for the database demonstrations was arranged: Todd from 10.45 to 11.00, Pamela from 12.30 to 12.45, and Richard from 12.45 to 1.00. Pamela has also agreed to attend lunch with Daniel Greenstein on Thursday, at a restaurant to be determined.
There is no date yet for the rescheduling of the Librarians without Borders forum. The possibility of making this an ongoing series was raised, as a means of highlighting the work abroad of other librarians in the Yale community.
Only one question has been submitted so far for Alice Prochaska's question and answer forum on September 26. SCOPA members are encouraged to think of questions, and the option to submit questions anonymously will be added to the web form in the hopes that this will stimulate submission.
The grantwriting workshop on October 5 will now be held in the Sterling Spoon, as the SML lecture hall was double booked. There is no word yet from Bill Wallach as to his A/V needs.
There is the possibility of a speaker for the history of paper forum. Jae has contacted the History of Paper Museum in Brookline, MA, and someone there has expressed a willingness to speak when she returns from China.
There has been no response yet on scholarly editing projects for November or December. Jock Reynolds' talk is still scheduled for November 29.
Julie Linden has suggested that SCOPA and M&PSA jointly sponsor a workshop on recent developments in web browsers. This may fall under the category of training more than professional development, and may be therefore be more appropriate for WAG or LSO sponsorship.
The new librarian orientation takes place on October 11. The format and content remain mostly unchanged from last spring's orientation. There are roughly six new librarians beginning since the spring, and SCOPA members will be given names of new staff to contact about the orientation at the next meeting, in order to maximize turnout.
Cindy reported that one person has so far expressed interest in applying for a SCOPA grant this year. The deadline for submission is the end of October. Pamela Mann agreed to fill the vacancy on this subcommittee.
C&T attendance at SCOPA programs was discussed. The fact that only M&Ps are eligible for SCOPA grants, mentorship and a few other initiatives, has led some C&Ts to believe that no SCOPA programs are open to them, not even forums. A note on the SCOPA website and accompanying all SCOPA event announcements may help change this perception.
Ellen reported on a meeting between Alice Prochaska and Diane Turner, in which Alice expressed an interest in outreach initiatives to New Haven Free Public Library. SCOPA may be one appropriate avenue of outreach.
The next SCOPA meeting will be held on October 1.
