New Librarians Orientation
Jae thanked Mary for making the arrangements, Cecile for her work on setting up the actual event and Todd for his work on the orientation web page.

Jae reported that Diane Turner said it was a successful event. Diane liked the new orientation format and felt that the socializing before business approach was an improvement.

Jae commented that removing Promotion Review was a good idea. She felt participants were relaxed and the orientation had less anxiety attached to it.

Richard commented that there was no pre-lunch socializing, and that some SCOPA members and new librarians were unable to mingle as a result. All of the new librarians arrived a little late, and we immediately sat down at the table for lunch. A discussion followed regarding how to increase "mingling." It was agreed that eating lunch around a table was a good idea, despite the inability to move around during the meal. Suggestions for increasing social interactions included:
· Increase the orientation to two hours, and start the sit-down lunch a little later (12:20 instead of 12:00). This would allow people to mill about for 15-20 minutes before sitting down.
· Serve a portable dessert. The dining hall does trays of bite-sized desserts we might want to serve.
Lastly, Diane's section of the program ran over the time allotted, which supports increasing the time limit to two hours.
