SCOPA Meeting Minutes
August 19, 2002

Present: Jae Rossman (chair), Richard Boursy (recording), Mary Caldera, Todd Fell, Eric Friede, Steve Jones, Pamela Mann

The next orientation for new librarians will take place during the week of September 16-20, probably on Tuesday, September 17. Mary is in charge of the arrangements. This event will run from noon to 1:30, and will include lunch. Those of us who spoke at the last orientation shall do so again. (We should try to be concise, because we also need to allow time for Diane to speak about promotion review.) There are approximately seven new librarians. Mary will obtain and distribute a list, so we can invite them personally. Todd will update the SCOPA web site with information for this orientation.

Forums:

Alice Prochaska's forum has been rescheduled for September 12.

SCOPA may be the sponsor for a talk by a preservation specialist from England invited by Alice. The date would be September 13.

The forum with Thomas Blanton, Director of the National Security Archive, has been rescheduled for the afternoon of September 19 in the SML Lecture Hall.

Cecile will ask Fred Musto about repeating his paper on "Cartographic Curiosities."

Jessamyn West of www.librarian.net has agreed to speak, but the details have not yet been worked out.

Jae and Denise Hersey were planning a forum on copyright, possibly with Arlene Bielefield of Southern Connecticut State University. Denise has departed, so Richard will pursue this.

Steve will continue working on the series of forums with librarians from the New Haven area.

Jae is organizing an appearance by Tatana Kellner, a book artist and the director of the Women's Studio Workshop. Jae is seeking another organization to co-sponsor the event with SCOPA.

Now that the summer is coming to a close, SCOPA will resume its regular schedule of meeting every two weeks. The next meeting will take place on Monday, September 9, at 2:00 PM in the Arts of the Book room.
