AGENDA: Forums updates and New Librarian Orientation

FORUM UPDATES AND IDEAS
Rochelle has scheduled the Librarians without Borders forum for February 27. Kim Parker and Uju Mollel will be the speakers.

Jae reported on several forums and forum ideas. Barbara Shailor has been scheduled to speak on March 27. Kris Hammond has not yet rescheduled. Jae and Kate Reynolds are discussing possibilities about a fun, light-hearted forum. As Diane had suggested, Jae asked the AULs if they had suggestions for forum topics. Ann Okerson suggested a report on the E-journal archiving project. The forum has been scheduled for March 13. Danuta Nitecki had several topics she thought would be of interest including: an informational session on the new “Electronic Library Initiatives”, the challenges of creating a browsing environment on campus, an update on assessment efforts including a report on the results of the Fall 2001 reader survey, and an update on renovation planning and work throughout the YUL. The report on renovations was considered to be of most interest. The report on the reader survey would also be a good forum, especially if it could be presented as a discussion format.

Steve reported that Pat Willis and Hazel Carby expressed interest in speaking on a Black history topic in honor of Black History Month. Steve has not yet received a response from anyone at the Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture in NYC. Maggie Powell of the Walpole Library is not available to speak until the Spring. Steve sent an email to Karen Reardon about doing a forum on LUNA. Jae suggested he contact Susan Williams as well.

Jae noted that if a member has a lead on a forum, but the speakers are not currently available, the member could go ahead and schedule them for the future.

Eric reported that the executive director of the American Theological Library Assoc., Dennis Norlin, was not available to speak at this time.

Mary suggested a how-to forum on professional development.

NEW LIBRARIAN ORIENTATION
Jae gave the background o the New Librarian Orientation. The Library Administration is reworking its current orientation program, of which the SCOPA session had been a part. Jae wanted to discuss the merits of continuing to do two orientations a year and alternatives. A discussion ensued in which the following was agreed upon: Jae will propose to Diane that SCOPA have smaller, less formal orientations 2-3 times a year based on the number of participants and 1 annual orientation similar in format to the past orientations.

Steve reported that he is still trying to get his web account working.
