Forum updates and Ideas

Steve reported that the forum  "Geographic Information Systems: Managing a Computer-based Reference, Instruction, and Production Service" by Abe  Parrish was well attended. Lots of interests were expressed after the talk.

Steve has contacted Howard Dodson, Director of the Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture in NYC, to give a speech in honor of Black History Month.  It’s tentatively scheduled on Feb. 20 from 12-1:30.  Barbara Shailor has agreed to have the forum held in Beinecke Lecture Hall. The committee discussed the possibility of providing refreshments. Mary will consult Diane Turner regarding the budget.

SCOPA members are interested in marketing and promoting the future forums to attract more attendees.  The forums may be held in locations other than Sterling. Beinecke Library, Law Library, Divinity Library and Medical Library are the possible sites.

Eric has invited Dennis Norlin, the Executive Director of ATLA (American Theological Library Association) to give a talk at the Lecture Hall on Feb. 6th at 3pm.

Mary has tentatively rescheduled the talk by Kevin Glick on March 5.

Steve will contact Susan Cirillo of SCSU to talk about her experiences as a Library Director.

Eric mentioned that the Grants forum will be scheduled in April.

Possible forums were discussed including:

Laura Bush – Mary will ask Diane some logistics questions. Need to make sure if we can handle it if she accepts the invitation.

Will Manley for a possible forum on stereotypes of librarians.

Fred Martz and Audrey Novak to talk about large projects management, Luna insight implementation at Yale and digital library initiatives.

Nicholson Baker on library preservation and other issues.

Copyright forum with Danuta and Katherine Haskins.

Security experts on library security.

USA Patriot Act teleconference video and discussion. The video is 2 hours long.

Next meeting will be on Feb. 3 at 2pm.
