SCOPA Meeting

6/9/2003

SML 410

2:00 – 3:00 p.m.

Attending:  Mary Caldera, Daniel Dollar, Eric Friede, Shawn Steidinger, Polly Chang, Steve Jones (recording)

Absent:  Cecile Mandour, Nancy Kuhl

Spring Forward meetings: The meeting began with a discussion of the Spring Forward meetings.  The updates from the strategic groups was deemed useful and international programs seemed a topic of interest.  MC shared the suggestions and comments provided by the meeting participants to keep SCOPA members informed of the kind of information Library members were asking for.

Forums: Discussed inviting Marvin Taylor.  After some reservations were expressed about the number of forums being suggested for the Fall, the members agreed that a forum by Taylor would be of broad appeal. Nancy has the go ahead to contact Marvin Taylor for a forum in November.

Upcoming events include two in Sept., Alice and Mark Rosenzweig; two in October, the new AUL (Meg Bellinger) and Matthew Beacom; possibly one in November, Yale international endeavors and one in December, Promotion Review.

The committee discusses the proposed International forum.  It will cover what Yale is now doing and how to get involved.  Some of the names suggested included Ann Okerson, Tatjana Lorkovic, Rich Richie, Ken Crilly Cesar Rodriguez  (Nicaragua), Ellen Hammond (US libraries and Japan).  Topics suggested include Pacific Manuscripts project, in which Australia and Hawaii (among others) participate in the filming of South Pacific archives and monographs in the South Pacific; Afghan pre-1930 bibliography; international internships; and the Oasis project.  A panel discussion format was suggested, as was holding this event like the Special Collections Fair.  Nancy and Cecile had both previously volunteered to work on this forum and will be asked to continue; aiming for a program in the fall.

Other proposed forums include Communication Committee and strategic group updates and an IFLA representative.

Eric reported 22 attendees at the grants forum.  Steve reported 33 attendees at the ELI program forum, and Karen Reardon and Danuta Nitecki want to do another similar forum at the end of the next academic year.

The Divinity Library presentation was dropped since scheduling has been problematic and two tours and teas have been scheduled there.

Shawn reported a successful Voyager conference though problems occurred in the breakout rooms due to immovable chairs.  There were 154 registrants and almost all showed.

Comments and feedback to SCOPA:  No comments or suggestions have been posted on SCOPA’s online comment box.  However, we have gotten suggestion and comments personally via email and at the Library wide meetings.

New Librarians’ Orientation:  An orientation will probably need to be scheduled for the Fall.

Our next meeting is in September, TBA, and Mary adjourned the meeting at 2:48p.m.
