SCOPA Meeting Minutes

April 26, 2004

Present: Nancy Kuhl (chair), Huei-Ju (Polly) Chang, Daniel Dollar (recording), Carla Heister, Shawn Steidinger, Rowena Griem

Absent: Abdul Hannawi, Soraya Magalhaes-Willson Diane Turner (ex officio)

SCOPA and Inclusiveness:

Nancy reported on her meeting with Diane Turner to discuss expanding the Mentoring and Grants Programs to include C&T library staff. Nancy asked for feedback from the group regarding these programs. Concerning grants, there was apprehension that C&T staff be placed in awkward and unequal position if they worked on a grant with someone who was their supervisor. The mentoring program, it was thought, could be expanded to include any library staff either enrolled or considering a degree in library science. Nancy will meet again with Diane convey the committee’s concerns and suggestions.

SCOPA Web Site Review:

The administrative schedule page will be retained and made a sub-page of the About SCOPA page. Nancy also circulated a draft of the revised text for the About SCOPA to solicit feedback. Finally, a number of revisions and suggestions were made to improve the web site. Daniel noted these and will attempt to make them in the coming weeks, or be this summer at the latest.

Summer Schedule:

SCOPA has traditional not scheduled meetings during the summer months. The next meeting, May 10th is tentatively scheduled as the last meeting before the summer. A final decision will be made at that meeting.

Forum Topics & Updates:

Dr. Richard Selzer, retired professor at the school of medicine and noted author, may be asked to speak in the fall.

Morris Cohen forum has been finalized for October 5, 2004.

Snapshot series: Rowena will discuss possible forums with the Preservation Department and the Babylonian Collection. A date will be set shortly by Toby Appeal for the
Medical Historical Library forum.

Carla is making arrangements for the May 20 virtual seminar, “Top Tech Trends For Librarians With Stephen Abram”

New Librarians Orientation:

The April 28th orientation was cancelled since only one new employee was available to attend. It was decided not to reschedule the event, but wait until the next orientation this fall. The committee was appreciative of the work Shawn did to both organize the event and make arrangements once it was cancelled.

Next Meeting:

Monday, May 10, 1:30-2:30 pm in SML 411.
