SCOPA Meeting Minutes

March 1, 2004

PRESENT: Nancy Kuhl (chair), Huei-ju “Polly” Chang, Daniel Dollar, Rowena Griem (recording), Carla Heister, Soraya Magalhaes-Willson and Diane Turner (ex-officio)

ABSENT: Shawn Steidinger

SCOPA’S NEW FOCUS ON INCLUSIVENESS:

Nancy reviewed the discussion on SCOPA and inclusiveness that took place at our last meeting.

Diane expressed her support for SCOPA to take active steps in becoming more inclusive while maintaining its commitment to improving professional awareness and increasing professional activity and professional growth among Yale library staff.  It was agreed that SCOPA should support professional development for all library staff, regardless of position, rank or level.  Keeping all staff informed on developing trends in the field of library science is critical to ensure that the library remain vital.  In addition, SCOPA will continue to promote the development of librarianship as a profession. Diane suggested that SCOPA collaborate with other groups, especially LiSA, to improve the quality of life in the work place and identify ways to recognize employees.

Rowena suggested submitting an article to Library Links to announce SCOPA’s expanded focus.

NEW LIBRARIANS’ ORIENTATION:

SCOPA guidelines require a New Librarians Orientation each semester, regardless of the number of participants.  Shawn will therefore schedule a date and invite the new librarians, as well as the two people who were unable to attend the last orientation.

FORUM FOLLOW UPS:

Diane suggested conducting a survey to solicit suggestions for new SCOPA forum topics.  Staff from a wide array of positions should be asked the following questions:

Have they attended a SCOPA forum before?

If yes, what forum proved the most helpful?

Do they have any suggestions for future topics?  Please give details.

Soraya suggested that SCOPA survey members of the Communications Group as well as their departments to reach a cross-section of library employees.

Nancy reiterated the importance of advertising for SCOPA forums more broadly, not just through the YULIB listserv.

Soraya recommended that we send announcements of upcoming forums four weeks before the scheduled date.
