SCOPA
Meeting Minutes
September
27, 2004
Attending: Nancy Kuhl, Daniel Dollar
(recording), Rowena Griem, Huei-Ju (Polly) Chang, and Carla Heister
Absent: Abdul Hannawi, (Shawn
Steidinger is on leave)
With
regret, we noted Soraya’s departure from our committee. Nancy will discuss with
Diana the early appointment of someone to fill the vacancy. Daniel will take
over updating the Publications page.
Our
best wishes to Soraya and her family in their new endeavors in Maryland!
New
Librarians Orientation (20 minutes)
Carla
is coordinating the orientation scheduled for October 14th from
11:30 to 1 pm in the Sterling Spoon. There are 10 potential invitees. Committee
members divided the list to invite them individually. Carla will pick up
information packets in Shawn’s office for use at the orientation. She will also
post an agenda with speaking assignments.
Medical
Historical Library Snapshot forum scheduled for October 19th has
been canceled. The forum may or may not be rescheduled for the
Spring. Toby and Rowena will talk in a few months to see what Toby and
SCOPA's schedules look like.
Professional
Development Panel. Danuta proposed a forum with Joan Swanekamp and Ed Kairiss,
who participated in the Frye Leadership Institute. The committee discussed a
panel session including our CLIR fellow, Daphnee Rentfrow. Carla volunteered to
organize this event for the Spring.
Additional
ideas from Danuta. She proposed two other forums that SCOPA could cosponsor
with SQIC. The committee decided to decline these opportunities, owing to our
full schedule and limited resources. Nancy will reply to Danuta.
We
discussed the tragic fire at the historic Anna Amalia Bibliothek in Germany
earlier this year, and how SCOPA could respond.
SCOPA
is barred from making a donation to the restoration efforts out of our funds.
We can post a message to YULIB about the event and point concerned staff to the
site set up by librarian at Vassar, who is coordinating the US response to the
tragedy and taking personal donations.
Forum
ideas include a presentation on the fire and materials damaged or lost, or a
session on digital preservation as a means to protect cultural history. The
Vassar librarian could be ideal for the former idea. Rowena would contact the
speaker and be the organizer for the forum. Discussion was then tabled for a
later meeting.
October 11, 2004, 1:30pm, SML 410. Please note room change.
