SCOPA Meeting Minutes
SCOPA Meeting: 25 September 2000
Present: Ellen Doon, Erika Heinen, Calvin Hsu, Tom Hyry (Chair and
recording), Stephanie Schmitt, Dajin Sun, Diane Turner.
Absent: Cindy Crooker, Jennifer Kostelnik
-Budget issues
Tom reported on a meeting with Diane Turner and Carolyn Claflin, where the
SCOPA budget was discussed. He informed the committee that he was going to
send a memo to LMC via Carolyn Claflin, asking them to authorize the use of
left over money from the 2000 SCOPA grants to offset some of the costs of
the Fall series. He reported that there were two options for asking for
this money:
- To ask for a lump sum that the group could divide between grants and
programming.
- To ask for money on top of the $5000 already marked for the grants
program, while keeping the $5000 explicitly reserved for the grants program.
Discussion ensued, with most of the group agreeing that option #2 would be
better while option #1 would be more likely. Some members raised concerns
about the grants subcommittee having a conflict of interest if the
remainder of the grants money could be spent on programming. The consensus
of the group was that grants disbursement should be the top priority for
any SCOPA money.
-Fall series
The fall series was briefly discussed and arrangements are being finalized.
We discussed whether or not to have food and it was proposed that SCOPA
members could provide baked goods if the budget could not swing
refreshments. The discussion about refreshments was tabled for another
meeting.
-Other forums:
Step agreed to arrange a follow up forum with Scott Bennett and Audrey
Novak regarding the Orbis 2 project.
Step also agreed to work with Ann Okerson to arrange a talk by Dale
Flecker, Head of the Harvard Library systems office on it's Library Digital
Initiative.
The Archives 300 project forum will take place November 28. Tom is
handling arrangements.
Ellen agreed to follow up with Alan Solomon to arrange for Kris Hammond of
Northwestern University to do a potential forum.
-Web pages regarding professional publications
