Library Governance
- Library Administration: Library Management Team (LMT) and Library Management Council (LMC)
- Library Committees: the Library acknowledges the importance of individual participation in committees in achieving the Library's goals. Committees serve many purposes, e.g. pooling of staff skills and resources; distribution of work; sharing of information and ideas; and opportunities for involvement and professional growth. Committee members (drawn from all levels of staff) are selected from volunteers and nominations and, sometimes, are appointed based on expertise and/or position.
Communications at Yale University Library (YUL)
- The Communications Committee. This group supports and promotes open and two-way communication across the entire Library system. The Communication Committee web page provides information on the committee and its work.
- Library Electronic Discussion Lists are widely used in the Library to send e-mail messages to a large number of staff at one time. YULIB-L is the most frequently used list as it is used to broadcast announcements to all staff. Staff are not automatically subscribed to all lists - review lists with your supervisor and contact the list owner to subscribe. Other Library lists: Available for job-specific topics, for a complete list, with subscription information see: http://www.library.yale.edu/wsg/listserv.html
- Library Web Pages:
- Library Publications:
- The Library Gazette is published semi-annually by Yale University Library, includes scholarly articles about Yale Collections, news from the Library, and annotated lists of recent acquisitions. Members often receive special Library publications as well.
- The 1931 Library Gazette
- Nota Bene: highlights collections, exhibits, and new initiatives. Also available in print. New issues are available for pick up throughout the library.
- Yale Bulletin & Calendar: University weekly news and calendar of events, includes classified ads. Also available in print. New issues are available for pick up throughout the library.
- Library Links: consists of articles and news pertaining to YUL and its staff.
Professional Service and Professional Development
- SCOPA:
- General Programming (including Forums): SCOPA endeavors to serve all library staff through a variety of programs, including a regular series of forums devoted to a wide range of topics concerning developments, changes, and initiatives in Yale libraries and academic libraries in general. Forum subjects broadly include (but are not limited to): the roles of libraries in scholarly communities and in the broader social landscape; recent developments and new initiatives in information technologies, library processes, library education, and legal and political matters concerning free access to information; library history and culture and printing history; issues of preservation and conservation; use of Yale library collections. SCOPA welcomes suggestions from all staff concerning possible future forums.
- Mentoring Program: supports professional development of Yale librarians, assists librarians new to Yale in becoming familiar with and involved in the library system; and opens the channels of communication between those at different levels and in different departments of the system.
- Grants Program: supports innovative research and investigative projects undertaken by members of the Managerial and Professional staff of the Yale University Library. The grants are intended to provide incentive and financial assistance for projects that contribute to the Yale library community through such avenues as scholarly research, c
reative program applications, or feasibility/pilot studies.
- New Librarians Orientation: helps introduce new Librarians and other professional staff members to SCOPA itself and to all professional development resources availiable to them.
- Recent Publications of Yale University Library Staff: publicizes recent contributions of Yale University Library staff to the professional and scholarly literature, to foster communication between staff members in the YUL system, and to act as a collection point for information regarding the research interests of Yale University Library staff.
- Library and Information Science Internet Resources
- LiSA - Library Staff Association: promotes staff knowledge and development, morale, and staff relations by providing opportunities for greater interchange of information between Library staff members on topics of common interest. The Council shall also promote social relationships among staff members by welcoming new staff and organizing social and cultural events.
- Travel Support: in order to support professional development among staff members, all managerial and professional staff are eligible to request professional travel funding support. Requests for professional travel are made based on the performance planning done each year with one's supervisor. Individuals are responsible for providing a justification for each request.
- Promotion Review: the promotion system in the Yale University Library is based on review by peers, with final decisions rendered by the University Librarian or Law Librarian. In consultation with his/her immediate supervisor, each candidate for promotion prepares a dossier comprised of supporting documentation. Each dossier is reviewed by the Library Promotion Review Committee, comprised of eight librarians from the various ranks in the library system. The Committee makes recommendations to the University Librarian or the Law Librarian, who makes the final determination in each case. Understanding the promotion process is essential for each entering librarian, as he/she could be a participant in the system as a candidate for promotion, a supervisor of candidates for promotion, or as department head or associate university librarian involved in preparing supporting documentation for promotion dossiers or consulting on promotion decisions. Each year, SCOPA sponsors a forum to review the procedures for applying for promotion. For more information see: http://www.library.yale.edu/lhr/pp/promotion.html
