All
the activities described above were performed by Ms. Zeco during the first
three months of her internship at the Yale University Library. Initially
it had been planned that at the end of those three months, she would return
to Sarajevo. However, the tight encirclement of the city made travel to
or from Sarajevo impossible. Consequently, Ms. Zeco's internship at Yale
was extended for one month by the Russian and East European Council and
for an additional three months by UNESCO.
May 15
- September 30
During this period, Ms. Munevera Zeco continued to work on identification
of Bosniaca materials at Yale.
She has
been also studying the computerized ORBIS system used at Yale University
Library. She has been learning the Online Library Catalog (OPAC) and other
Citation Databases which includes:
- Changing
databases
- Searching
by title
- Searching
by author
- Searching
by subject heading
- Searching
by call number
- Searching
by key word
- Keyword
searching using qualifiers
- Reviewing/revising

- Subject

One of her tasks
was to learn how to interpret records in the MARC (machine-readable cataloging)
format. This involved proficiency in the usage not only of records in ORBIS,
but also of records in the Library of Congress database, with which Yale
maintains a computer link. Once she had mastered this, she learned to input
records of newly-received library materials into ORBIS. ORBIS is the system
for all stages of the acquisitions and cataloging processes. It allows for
ordering, receiving, paying, and fully cataloging of library materials.
This is done on bibliographic, copy holdings and order/pay/receipt screens.
Ms. Zeco has learned to create and use all types of records.
She has also learned how to derive bibliographic information from the
Library of Congress into ORBIS. The skills which she has acquired during
her internship are ones which would be readily applicable to the National
and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Other
Accomplishments
Ms. Zeco has been instrumental in the work on Bosniaca. Her presence at
Yale inspired a broad library community effort to recreate as fully as
possible a bibliography of Bosniaca, as the necessary preliminary to reconstituting
a core library of Bosniaca in Sarajevo once peace returns to Bosnia and
Herzegovina. Among many institutions that offered help it is important
to mention OCLC, a national database. OCLC programmers plan to pull out
the bibliographical information on Bosnia and Herzegovina as represented
by the holdings of North American libraries and draw them together in
a database. For such a database to be truly up to date the bibliographic
records of many appropriate items must still be converted to machine readable
form and records from several other sources need to be pulled together
possibly by yearly supplements.
Last but
not least, Ms. Munevera Zeco has written an article that has been accepted
for publication in The Library Quarterly and will appear in the
July 1996 issue of the journal. The article is entitled "The National
and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina During the Current War."
