FINAL
REPORT OF YALE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
FOR PARTICIPANT:
TIINA
TOLLI
September 7 - December 22, 2001
In the framework
of Slavic and East European Collection's Baltic Librarian Fellows Program
I visited the Yale University Library as the first intern from Tartu University
Library. During the internship I mostly worked in the Slavic Reading room
at Sterling Memorial Library and visited other collections and departments
at SML as well as several other libraries comprising the Yale University
Library system. I also visited Harvard University Libraries, New York
Public Library and the Library of Congress in Washington as part of my
program at Yale. My one semester internship at Yale became possible thanks
to a scholarship generously funded by Yale alumnus Dr. Kristaps J. Keggi
and thanks to the Curator of the Slavic and East European Collection,
Tatjana Lorkovic, who has created and maintained the Program for Visiting
Fellows from various East European countries with the help of her assistants
for several years. I would like to mention as well the support given to
the program by the Yale University Library.
During
my three and a half month Fellowship from September 7th to December 22nd,
2001, I mostly concentrated on the problems of collection development
and acquisitions issues. I focused also on learning about the differing
aspects of the work of area specialists especially in the fields of history,
literature and architectural history. Although there are many basic differences
in work organization between American and Estonian libraries in this field,
I learned as much as I possibly could about the structure of the relevant
departments in the libraries I visited. I paid much attention to the organization
of workflow, to the division of different tasks between staff members,
and especially to those areas in the work of the collection development
that are organized in a different way from our Estonian libraries. I also
gathered valuable ideas concerning the assessment and evaluation of already
extant collections and to dealing with the new electronic media. Information
and ideas concerning electronic resources, electronic journals, CD-ROMS
and web pages as well as digitalizing projects are invaluable to us in
Estonia as our work has only begun in these fields.
The visit
turned out to be a very informative and stimulating experience. I saw
several beautiful and technically well equipped library buildings and
became familiar with their wonderfully extensive collections. I learned
about the wide ranging collection activities and interests of major American
research libraries as well as the impressive amount of work done in acquiring
and processing materials from all over the world. I also familiarized
myself with the work of Acquisitions, Cataloging and Public Services in
all the libraries I visited. Touring the different area collections at
the Yale University Library gave me a good general overview of the multiple
possibilities in acquiring necessary materials from various countries
and in building up and maintaining the collections in the vernacular languages.
I was deeply interested during my stay here at Yale in finding out all
I could about the responsibilities and work of the various subject and
area specialists. I also investigated various aspects of the co-operation
of my American colleagues and area and subject specialist librarians with
the faculty, including how materials concerning different fields of study
were collected. I had many valuable discussions with specialists working
on this field in the Research Services and Collections Department as well
as in the area collections and I highly appreciate the knowledge and expertise
they shared with me.
I greatly
enjoyed my stay at Yale. I attended many wonderful lectures, saw many
interesting exhibitions as well as the wonderfully rich collections of
numerous museums and was able to listen to some good performances of music.
In addition to many open lectures I had the wonderful opportunity to attend
Prof. Paul Freedman's undergraduate class on early medieval history which
I enjoyed immensely. I also had, thanks to several good friends, many
chances to make short trips out of New Haven on weekends and was able
to visit other beautiful and interesting places in New England (Cape Cod,
Boston, Newport) and even farther afield (Brigantine and Atlantic City
in New Jersey). I am deeply convinced that the personal contacts with
so many nice and friendly people comprised the most valuable and essential
part of my experience. I am very grateful to everyone I got to know during
my visits to different libraries who took the time to talk to me and who
made me feel very welcome and at ease during my stay at Yale. I hope that
my internship will make for fruitful future contacts. I certainly will
do my best to ensure that relations and possible co-operation between
the Yale University Library and the Tartu University Library will be mutually
rewarding
