Emerging Markets: Databases

Bloomberg

 

(SSL Bloomberg Machine). A powerful financial database offering a quick glance at international markets and at the performances of financial instruments with a twenty minutes delay. It provides extensive charts, tables, and analyses on financial instruments, especially on bonds. Bloomberg has, besides data, news in a range of detail -- from news headlines to full-featured stories from all parts of the world. Includes detailed information on economic conditions for specified countries, including the EIU Country Profiles. Available on the dedicated Bloomberg machine at SSL.

Datastream

(SSL Only). An online service that provides international economic and financial data in time series format. Series are acquired from national governments and banks, the Federal Reserve, the International Monetary Fund, OECD, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) and other international agencies. Additional features include commodity prices, debt and equity information, exchange rates, interest rates, stock market indices, futures, options, and much more. Time coverage varies, but many series are available in daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annual intervals for up to 10 years or longer. Datastream is accessible on the economics workstation at SSL. An excellent online manual is available via Princeton University.

EconLit

(Yale Only). Econlit is a comprehensive bibliography, with selected abstracts and full-text book reviews of international research in economics from more than 400 major journals, working papers, books and collective volumes from 1969 to the present. It is compiled by the American Economic Association from many sources, including the Journal of Economic Literature and the Index of Economic Articles.

Global Development Finance

World Bank resource that presents data on selected regional income and indebtedness for 150 countries and regions, including total debt stocks and flows, major economic aggregates, total external debt, and long-term debt expressed in principal ratios. Other features include total debt outstanding, undisbursed debt, interest payments, commitments, disbursements, net flows, principal repayments, and currency composition of long-term debt. Data can be downloaded directly into Excel, SAS and other statistical software packages.

ISI Emerging Market

Specialized database on emerging markets that offers news, company information, and financial data from more than 25 emerging markets in Asia, Latin America and Central and Eastern Europe. Includes current news, company and industry information, financial markets data, and macroeconomic analysis. Also known as Internet Securities.

JOLIS

JOLIS is the online catalog of the Joint Bank-Fund Library Network. This network is made up of fourteen World Bank and IMF Libraries which work together to provide information services and resources to patrons. JOLIS allows users to search references to books, journal titles, journal articles, working papers, conference proceedings, technical reports, videos, software, electronic resources, and more. It also includes references to published IMF and World Bank materials.

STAT-USA

(Yale Only). STAT-USA is a collection of databases which are now available on the Internet. Includes the National Trade Data Bank which includes market research, export opportunities, reports on demographic, political and socio-economic conditions for hundreds of countries; the Economic Bulletin board which is a comprehensive source for government-sponsored economic releases and business leads; the Commerce Business Daily; the Survey of Current Business, and much more.

World Development Indicators

Contains World Bank data from over 200 countries and more than 800 time series, including national accounts, balance of payments, external debt and finance, population, and various socio-economic indicators. Incorporates data from previous and current World Bank publications including World Tables, Social Indicators of Development, World Population Projections, and the World Bank Atlas. Data can be downloaded directly into Excel, SAS and other statistical software packages.
