Databases and CD ROMs

EconLit

EconLit, produced by the American Economic Association, is an expanded version of the Journal of Economic Literature. It contains bibliographic references and some abstracts for journal articles, books, articles in collective volumes and dissertations. It also contains the bibliographic database Abstracts of Working Papers in Economics, produced by Cambridge University Press.

Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe

LexisNexis Academic Universe is a full-text news and information service that provides access to newspapers, magazines, transcripts, business and legal information.

STAT-USA (U.S. Bureau of the Census)

STAT-USA, a service of the U.S. Department of Commerce, is designed to deliver vital economic, business, and international trade information produced by the U.S. Federal government. It includes the State of the Nation, which provides current and historical economic and financial releases and economic data, and GLOBUS and the National Trade Data Bank, which provides current and historical trade-related releases, international market research, trade opportunities, and country analysis.

World Trade Analyzer

The World Trade Analyzer (formerly World Trade Database) is a product of the International Trade Division of Statistics Canada, offering a comprehensive matrix of international trade flows. Customized tables allow the user to track export statistics by country or origin and destination, by SITC code and/or product name. Data is derived from export statistics reported to the United Nations Statistical Office from over 160 countries. Figures are broken down by country and commodity, and are reported annually, in thousands of US dollars, from 1980 to the present. Data from 1970 to 1980 are also available from the NBER Trade Database on CD ROM, available on 2-hour reserve from the Social Science Library Circulation desk.

This is a brief listing of some international trade websites, with an emphasis on U.S. Government pages. For additional information on United Nations related international trade websites, such as the World Trade Organization, please visit the UN Scholars' Workstation.

Working Papers

The full-text of many economics working papers on international trade are available on the Internet. To find a listing of working papers series available at the Social Science Libraries, follow this link. Papers housed in the Economic Growth Center Collection can also be found here.

IDEAS - Internet Documents in Economics Access Service. Searchable archive of economics working papers broken down by working paper series and subject (JEL) category, including a section on international trade. Search results indicate if the full-text of the paper may be downloaded.

WoPEc - Electronic Working Papers in Economics. Full text of over 6,700 economics working papers from more than 330 series.

Print Sources at Yale Libraries

Several International Governmental Organizations (IGOs) including the World Trade Organization and the World Bank issue timely and relevant reports on international trade conditions. Many contain annotated statistical tables which can point you to additional resources. The U.S. Department of Commerce also publishes several important reference volumes on the political and economic framework of international trade, and investment conditions throughout the world.

Direction of Trade Statistics

(SSL Reference HF91. D57). Provides monthly and annual country data for imports and exports in US dollars, arranged by source of imports and destination of exports for each country. Excellent source of time series data, with annual figures in most cases going back 20 years or more. Data is also available on computer datafile.

International Trade Statistics Yearbook

(SSL Reference HF91.U473). Provides commodity import and export data by volume and price for 169 countries grouped by four digit SITC Code (Rev.2). Divided into two volumes. Volume one contains country tables that include total merchandise trade, percentages of imports and exports by economic category, value of import and export trade in US dollars by countries and regions, and quantity and value of exports and imports by commodity. Volume two contains commodity tables showing imports and exports, with a maximum of 50 countries in order of magnitude.

Trade Policy Reviews

(Most volumes in Law: JXYW T67...) (Selected Countries). Series published by the World Trade Organization, providing a review of the political and economic framework of trade policies of over 78 nations. with special attention paid to import quotas, tariffs, and other trade barriers. Each report describes the country's trade-related policies and the basic institutional and legal structure affecting the trade policy decision-making process. Each volume also provides tables and graphics of basic economic data for each country.

UNCTAD Commodity Yearbook

(MUDD, Govt Documents Center TD/B/C.1/STAT). Provides disaggregated world, regional and national data for imports, exports and consumption of selected agricultural commodities, minerals, metals, petroleum, and summary import and export tables for international merchandise trade. Data is provided for both value and quantity of each commodity and in most cases goes back for six years; data for earlier years can be obtained by consulting previous editions.

U.S. Foreign Trade Highlights

(MUDD, Govt Documents Center C 61.28/2:). Presents data on U.S. international trade in goods and services, including aggregate imports and exports, U.S. country/regional trade balances, trade by 2 and 3 digit SITC classification for the top 20 commodities by country and region, and shifts in the U.S. commodity trade with major trading partners. The only U.S. Department of Commerce publication that provides detailed commodity trade data that is consistent over time.

U.S. Global Trade Outlook 1995-2000

(Mudd, Govt Documents Center Reference C 61.34/2:995-2000). Interim successor to the U.S. Industrial Outlook with a greater emphasis on the globalization of U.S. Industries. Contains industrial profiles on selected developed countries and regions, as well as chapters on the Big Emerging markets, and highlights of U.S. industrial growth trends in the key countries and sectors. Includes industrial growth projections to the year 2000. Succeeded by U.S. Industry and Trade Outlook '98.

U.S. Industry and Trade Outlook '98

(Mudd, Govt Documents Center Reference C 61.48:998). Successor to the U.S. Industrial Outlook. Presents hundreds of industry reviews, analyses, and forecasts in an international context. Chapters are industry-specific and contain information on global and domestic market trends, world market share, international competitiveness, U.S. trade and export dependence, import penetration, industry forecast tables, and environmental issues. Includes excellent information on the international services sector.
