Introduction to Collections
The Social Science Library (SSL), including the Economic Growth Center Collection is located in Urban Hall, 140 Prospect Street. The library contains over 140,000 printed volumes, 7,000 journal and serial titles, the Social Science Data Archive, and a number of other specialized electronic resources. SSL has most current literature published in the English language with other volumes shelved in both the Sterling Memorial Library and the Mudd Library. The fields of business, economics, organization and management, political science, and sociology are served by the Social Science Library, complemented by the collections of the Government Documents Center and Information Center, the Cross Campus Library, the Sterling Memorial Library and the Lillian Goldman Law Library at Yale Law School. The SSL acquires new books in these fields as well as studies issued by associations, inter governmental organizations, and research institutions. The collection also includes many academic journals and serials. The reference collection consists of printed and electronic resources which contain financial information, subject indexes, bibliographies, directories, working papers, and economic statistics.
Special Collections The Economic Growth Center Collection focuses on individual developing countries and the economic surveys, plans and statistical sources which are issued by governments, research institutions, and associations. It contains over 3,900 active serials. Arranged on the shelf by country within world regions that are coded with prefixes to LC call numbers. Serial files are retained for five years. Older volumes are transferred to the Seeley G. Mudd Library or Sterling Memorial Library. SSL collects material to support the curricular and research needs of the Yale School of Management. Special emphasis is given to resources focusing on management in the public sector and in nonprofit organizations. The collection of Company Reports (on CD-ROM) includes annual reports, 10K's, and proxy statements dating from 1976 for NYSE companies. Beginning with 1990, the library also receives reports of AMEX and NASDAQ companies. The Social Science Library maintains the Social Science Data Archive and the Yale Roper Collection. These collections are used for statistical analysis of survey and numeric data. Data acquisition and help interpreting codebooks are provided by SSLIS librarians. Programming and extracting advice and statistical consultation are available at the StatLab which is also at 140 Prospect (432-3277). |
