Education - Selected Internet Resources: Resources for Teachers of History and Social Studies History Resources American Memory: Historical Collections for the National Digital Library As part of the Digital Libraries Initiative - Phase II, the Library of Congress is offering many of its American Memory collections, a substantial body of multimedia content: document and pictorial images, searchable text, recorded sound, maps, and motion pictures, at this site. A component of this site is Today in history which provides a daily account of significant events in American history. EDSITEment brings together the best of the humanities on the web. This site contains a constantly growing collection of the most valuable online resources for teaching English, history, art history, and foreign languages. EDSITEment is a joint project of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Council of the Great City Schools, MCI Communications Corp., and the National Trust for the Humanities. History Matters is a web based United States history survey course designed for use by high-school or college teachers. The site serves as a gateway to Web resources and offers unique teaching materials, first-person primary documents and threaded discussions on teaching U.S. history. The History Net is a joint effort of America's largest publisher of history magazines, the History Group of Cowles Enthusiast Media and the National Historical Society. The site is designed to be the history enthusiast's one-stop resource for information, products and services. This web gateway provides access to lesson plans, features and activities, and primary source materials for the study of American History. National Archives and Records Administration Digital Classroom A web site designed to encourage teachers of students at all levels to use archival documents in the classroom. The Digital Classroom provides materials from NARA, methods for teaching with primary sources, and sample lesson plans. National Archives and Records Administration Research Room Provides links to records, ranging in subject matter, that can be found in the National Archives. Teacher's Guide to the Holocaust The Teacher's Guide to the Holocaust is a web site that creates a powerful combination of words, music, photographs and art. The site provides a factual but chilling account of the Holocaust, its victims and perpetrators. Teacher resources, classroom activities, Web links, a Holocaust glossary and timeline are also featured. Teaching with Historic Places (TwHP) uses properties listed in the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places to enliven history, social studies, geography, civics, and other subjects. The site includes ready-to-use lesson plans, multifaceted education kits, and professional development materials and workshops.
Other Selected History Resources Social Studies Resources CARTS (Cultural Arts Resources for Teachers & Students) is a collection of online resources pertaining to folklore, anthropology, traditional arts, oral history, and community-based education. CARTS is designed to help K-12 teachers, students, and community members develop links between school curricula and local cultural traditions. K-12 Electronic Guide for African Resources on the Internet A web site designed to assist K-12 teachers, librarians, and students in locating on-line resources on Africa that can be used in the classroom. New York Times Learning Network The New York Times Learning Network is a free service for students in grades 6-12, their teachers and parents. The site offers news summaries, quizzes and puzzles for students; related lesson plans for teachers; and online discussions and product reviews for parents. The site is updated Monday through Friday throughout the school year. Peace Corps Kids World is a web site designed for elementary and middle school students. The site includes a history of the Peace Corps, describes its purposes and goals, and explains the value of service and volunteerism. The site also includes information about world geography in the Explore the World section and examines the diverse cultures of their countries. RETAnet (Resources for Teaching about the Americas) RETAnet is an outreach project of the Latin America Data Base (LADB), a part of the Latin American Institute at the University of New Mexico. RETAnet works with secondary teachers, educational specialists, and scholars to make accessible resources and curriculum materials about Latin America, the Spanish Caribbean, and the U.S. Southwest. Social Studies Lesson Plans and Resources Dr. Marty Levine, Professor Emeritus of Secondary Education, California State University, Northridge (CSUN), has gathered lesson plans and resources from the Internet which social studies teachers will find useful. Theory and Research in Social Education Theory and Research in Social Education is designed to stimulate and communicate systematic research and thinking in social education. Its purpose is to foster the creation and exchange of ideas and research findings that will expand knowledge and understanding of the purposes, conditions, and effects of schooling and education about society and social relations. A web site designed to help teachers bring the UN into their classrooms. Throughout the site teachers can find grade-appropriate online activities and interactive games to use in their classrooms. Curriculum Corner provides six lesson modules, two that offer on-line components. Topics include demining, human rights, health, the UN, and the environment. Events Orbit alerts teachers to international days and UN-sponsored live online features, and Resource Source provides a bevy of useful information, including an international database, global trends, a guide to the UN, a collection of selected learning resources, and city profiles.
