The Sports Collection at Yale University Library

The Sterling Memorial Library, Cross Campus Library, Social Science Library, Beinecke Library, Mudd Library, Government Documents and Information Center, Medical Library and Library Shelving Facility hold materials that are part of our small sports collection. The collection includes monographs and serials on a variety of subject areas such as athletics, coaching, exercise, nutrition, kinesiology, physical education, recreation, games, tourism, women in sports, leisure, history of sport, and the sociology of sport and the variety of sports in our world. Collection development is based on the needs of the Yale University interdisciplinary interests of faculty, their students and the Yale Community at large. Sports medicine materials may be found in the Harvey Cushing/John Hay Whitney Medical Library. Undergraduate level materials are held at the Cross Campus Library and Sterling Memorial Library. In-depth research materials are found at the Sterling Memorial Library. Most of our sports journals are located at the Sterling Memorial Library and Mudd Library. Social Sciences Data Archive and government education statistics are located at the Government Documents and Information Center. Older and low use volumes are held at the Library Shelving Facility (LSF) and Mudd Library; all of these materials may be requested via Eli Express. The Mudd Library Stacks (38 Mansfield Street) are open to Yale affiliated users. Most sports materials fall under the Library of Congress call number range GV and older Yale classified materials under the range Nl (Recreation), Uzk and Uzn (Hunting), and Xd (Bibliographies/Recreation). Yale University Library collects very selectively of foreign language sports materials for scholarly use and study that represent innovative, seminal research internationally, and international sports.

Our virtual collection and core database resources include SportsDiscus, Education Full Text, ERIC, Sociological Abstracts and PsycINFO/PsycARTICLES. A myriad of subject content databases cover the areas of sports biography, sports associations, physical education research, sports psychology, sports science, sports rules, and other varied subject content areas. We also subscribe to a variety of full-text sports online journals. Our Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library holds small collections of rare sports materials. Our Cross Campus Library holds a small collection of unique Mountaineering monographs.
