Summary of Objectives and Actions

The goals, as articulated by the IPPG during the course of its work, are articulated below.

Recognizing that International and Area programs form one of the University's and President's highest priorities for the coming decade, the Library will:

  1. Enhance communication and collaboration throughout the library system regarding its international and area studies programs and collections and other resources.

  2. Enhance communication and collaboration across the entire University regarding the Library's international and area studies programs and collections and other resources.

  3. Modify and expand the Library's programs, policies, and opportunities with regard to international travel, fellows, internships, and staff exchanges.

  4. Fully support the University's courses of study, research projects, new appointees, fellows, visitors, and other expanded (and expanding) manifestations of international commitments, to fill existing gaps and needs, at least minimally.

The Actions required to fulfill the above goals require:

  1. Catch up with support of new and expanded areas of University interest, especially in its area studies programs. At the moment, the Library is lagging behind in resourcing areas such as East Asia, the Near East, South Asia, and other existing and emerging initiatives. The Library will reallocate about $100K of collections funds in the coming FY to meet the content needs; will ask for Provostial funding for ongoing staffing needs in the region of $150K.

  2. Create a two-year position of International Program Librarian in order to work with the AUL Collections, in order to identify and pull together all components of the library's current activities, unmet needs, potential areas for collaboration, and to identify/reach out beyond the Library in ways currently not being done. This will be done thru reallocation of AUL funds for two fiscal years, without request to the Provost.

  3. Create a cross-cutting international Council of library staff with active interests in international and area studies, which will meet formally and informally and support the AUL and Program Officer in fostering in-library communication, policy review, and support of all the areas outlined in this brief summary. Existing staff resource will be called upon.
