“The Song of Terezin”
Franz Waxman

This work was commissioned by the Cincinnati Musical Festival Association for its 45th May Music Festival. It was first performed by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Stanislaw Srowaczewdki, Conductor, with Betty Allen, Mezzo Soprano, and the May Festival Chorus and Combined Festival Children’s Chorus on May 22, 1965.

The English and German texts are the composer’s adaptations of translations of poems in the book...‘I NEVER SAW ANOTHER BUTTERFLY’...(McGraw-Hill Book Company, New York, 1964), a collection of poems and drawings by children imprisoned in the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp, 1942-1944. This book was originally published by the State Jewish Museum in Prague in 1962.

The score was a gift by Franz Waxman’s son to the Fortunoff Video Archive.
