Simon H.

“The Jews [in Salonica] were integrated with non-Jews. No problems with anti-Semitism. The government was very liberal. The only difference between Jews and gentiles was that the Jews went to synagogue, the gentiles went to church. Everything else was the same, same rights and obligations. There was no anti-Semitism. There was an assimilated, but strong Jewish community. It helped orphans, provided money to educate young men. They had a way to collect money from all Jews.”
