“If you started at the corner of Star Street and Main Street, you could literally go for about a kilometer and encounter nothing else but Jewish institutions or Jewish communal servants. At the very beginning of the street was a kosher delicatessen and then next to it was the grocery store...There were at least two dozen functioning synagogues in the community...The very next building was this beautiful Moorish edifice that was reckoned to be one of the nicest synagogues in Hungary...This was the Main Synagogue.”
