Louis H.

“We kept moving east until we met the Russians at the Elbe. The people we encountered in the camp at Nordhausen had come from all over Europe. Not all were Jewish. Nearby there was a missile factory. Here they worked on little food until they collapsed. There were many barracks there - most were shot up. I glanced into one and saw corpses all over - there was no more room outside. I couldn’t stay long, but the medics came in and took care of burial. We took townspeople off the street and made them help us clean up. They were astounded - said they didn’t know this had gone on even though the town was just about 1 mile away from the camp and the air was filled with the camp’s smell. At this particular camp I spoke with some of the survivors. They had been taken from their homes in France, in Spain, all over Europe. There were no children or women, although I did meet women later in the DP camp.”
