I...was born in Vilna on May 12, 1927 in a religious family. My father
was a rabbi and practiced in the temple. He was a hazzan and he read the
Torah in the synagogue; he gave courses in the Talmud and the Gemara.
My family, which consisted of myself, my parents, and my older brother,
and my little sister, was very religious, though not Hasidic or Orthodox.
Everything was in the modern style. We were educated in Jewish culture.
We went to a Jewish school called Ezra which was very integrated, very
multi-dimensional. We studied in Yiddish, Hebrew, and Polish in all subjects.
It was a very interesting school and gave us much learning and wisdom.
