Black Caucus of the American Library Association

E.J. Josey, Former President of ALA

E.J. Josey, Professor Emeritus at the University of Pittsburgh, will deliver an address at Yale at the Hall of Graduate Studies, Rm 119, 320 York Street at 10:30 am. His talk entitled, The Reflections of an African American Librarian, will document struggles to fight segregation, the integration of the southern library associations in 1964 as well as the status of the African-American librarian in academic research libraries today.

Dr. Josey was the first African-American president of the American Library Association (ALA) and founder of its Black Caucus. He has served as mentor to numerous individuals who were and are developing their careers in library services.

Light refreshment will be available after his talk in the Memorabilia room of the Sterling Memorial Library for attendees.

Rededication of the New Haven Public Library, Stetson Branch.

Dr. Josey will participate in the rededication of the Stetson Library, located in the heart of the Dixwell community. He will again address the convocation of citizens, city and state representatives stressing the vibrant role that libraries play in our communities. The ceremonies begin at 2:00 pm.

Another objective of the rededication will be to encourage young people of color to view the occupation of librarian as a viable profession to which they might aspire. Yale University officials will join Mayor John DeStefano and Howard Mcginn, the City Librarian in the celebration.

Installation of the New Haven Chapter of the Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA).

The BCALA induction of Chapter members and reception will take place from 5:30pm - 7:30pm at the Afro-American Cultural Center, at Yale.
