A Program of Activities

Echoing the words of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s I Have a Dream, the Wake the Dream events provide the opportunity for all library staff members to come together and learn about different cultural contributions, each other and the breadth and depth of our library's collections.

Overarching Objectives:

  • To promote an understanding and appreciation of the diversity of
experience each of us as co-workers brings to this work environment.
  • To inspire staff to explore the multicultural richness of our own
    library collections.

Through these informal gatherings and exchanges, the work environment can become a place where all library personnel and library users feel welcomed, valued and respected.

Richness of background, depth of experience and ideas are important contributions that all library personnel bring to our workplace. Moreover, our customers often represent the diverse backgrounds, philosophies, ideas and depth of experience reflected by our library collections. In order to serve our customers in a superior manner, the library needs staff members who are sensitive to these issues.

The Wake the Dream program complements the more formal human resource program of recruitment, mentoring and retention of a workforce of the highest caliber.
