Minutes
18 December 1997
Present: Kate Reynolds, Diane Turner, Debbie Falvey, Miriam Spectre, Kalee
Sprague, Tony Massarelli, Jeannette Murdock, Ellen Ellickson, Marie Whited,
Jan Glover (recording)
Announcements:
Judy Schiff will be presenting a program on Amistad for Martin Luther King
Day January 19. This is a lecture for the Yale and New Haven Community and
will be in the SML Lecture Hall.
The next meeting will be in January. We reviewed the minutes of the last
meeting and discussed the possibility of putting them on the Training web
site, with a message to the list with the URL.
Discussions:
-
"Intro to Orbis" classes were well received. We'll be repeating these classes
quarterly. The next one will be in February for another 30 people. We discussed
putting new staff in this class. The class evaluations circulated through
the room for us all to read.
-
T & D Road Show. Members of the committee shared their road show experiences.
There are some departments still to be visited, and members have plans to
do so over the next few weeks. Debbie prepared a list of committee members
to bring as a handout and that was well received.
-
Other comments from staff: interested in upcoming resource workshops;
disappointment about not getting into the Orbis classes; need more classes;
maybe drop-in sessions; put together the year's schedule for planning. We
decided to promote the class to new employees and people who need extra help,
and we decided not to post the list of attendees to the list.
The list of attendees will go to supervisors, along with a confirmation to
attendee and supervisor. Every flyer for a training session will include
the standard statement that attending the class is paid release time, and
that staff should notify supervisor.
-
Staff Development Resources Library. Jeanette reported that the videos have
been copied and she will catalog. They will have a provisional record (?)
and will be searchable by "training & staff development" allowing staff
to locate a complete list of the collection. They will be available for a
two-week loan period. Tom, Maureen and Jeanette will meet to figure out the
cataloging. The video collection will be housed in CCL. We discussed marketing
the collection. Ideas that came up are: tent cards, web page as part of the
training site, a guide to finding these materials as well as others that
might be in our collections.
-
Advanced Orbis Searching. Mickey Koth and her subcommittee (Kalee, Ellen,
Miriam) mentioned that the Advanced Orbis tutorial is on the web for review.
They would like to update and wanted comments from the group. URL:
-
Technology Training. Kalee & Kate reported that they are looking at
professionally produced products that are Internet based. These products
have all sorts of classes on everything and are sophisticated enough to keep
track of progress, including pre- and post- testing. They will be making
recommendations soon. The products should have two levels, for novices and
for the more proficient user.
-
Customer Service Module. Jan reported that she and Tony are reading materials
about Customer Service that Kate shared with them. They will meet in January
to brainstorm.
Committee members going to ALA will be on the lookout for customer service
type materials.
Next month we will continue our discussion about Staff Resource time in the
EC, and Using Email Effectively.
