Center for Multimedia Learning (SCML)
This new center, located in the
Seeley G.
Mudd Library functions as a
classroom and not simply a computer lab. A large conference style table is
situated at one end of the room. The learning center is available as a
meeting area for staff involved in team projects requiring the use of
multimedia resources. The room itself is accessible via an elevator. One of
the workstations is wheelchair-accessible.
Today's libraries increasingly require their staff to master the latest information
technology. The SCML will allow all library staff, including student workers,
to be expertly trained in a variety of electronic applications.
The center houses 12 individual workstations outfitted with video and sound
cards as well as a state-of the art projection unit. When fully equipped,
it will make a VCR and monitor, printer and image scanner available to library
staff. It will accommodate formal instructor-led technology training and function
as a self-directed
learning center for library staff.
Library managers, supervisors and team leaders who need to provide
"just-in-time" training for various bibliographic applications now have a
place to conduct their own sessions.
Future plans include various computer-based training (CBT) and web-based learning
tools that will allow staff to independently master typing and various applications
for work projects from web editors to advanced levels of data base applications.
These sessions will allow self-paced learning with minimal assistance or with
guidance from a "peer coach."
