Getting Started With Your Learning Plan

Gather these materials before you begin to complete your learning plan: your position description, your department mission statement or the Library Vision/Mission/Values statements, competencies identified for a specific field, or other appropriate strategic planning documents.

Keep in mind that the purpose of the learning plan is to improve or develop our individual and organizational capabilities to achieve the mission, vision, and goals of the library. It is not necessary to follow this guide in any specific order. However, you may wish to read through the guide first.

The Self-Directed Guide

A brief description of each section in the self directed guide is presented below.

I.

Developing your learning goals
In this section, you identify the mission of your department and state the goal(s) of your learning plan.

II.

Self-assessment
Consider the challenges and changes facing your department and our library and identify the competencies (skills, knowledge and attributes) necessary for successful performance of your job. Begin to identify areas for improvement and development.

III.

Identifying core competencies
Review your job description to identify competencies for your specific position or core competencies for your specific field.
Refer to Resources for developing your Learning Plan or consult with your supervisor or LHR.

IV.

Your preferred learning style
Take a moment and reflect upon your preferred learning style. This information may reveal alternative modes of learning.

V.

A continuum of learning activities
Keep your individual learning preferences in mind as you specify your learning activities. These activities can range from self-directed to instructor-led and provide flexibility in completing your learning goals.

VI.

The planning meeting
Schedule a meeting with your supervisor to review your plan. The major outcome of this conversation should be a commitment on behalf of both supervisor and staff member to set the learning activities in motion. Be sure to set a review date. Refer to Develop & Submit Your Learning Plan.
