Cross Training Initiative
One of the outcomes from
the strategic planning large group meetings was a strong recommendation for
our Library to develop cross-training programs available to interested staff
members. In February ('04), Library Human Resources conducted a series of focus
groups to gather additional opinions and reactions to such a concept and ideas
about how such a program might be constructed. The focus group discussions revealed
broad enthusiasm and support for developing a library-wide cross training initiative.
The groups identified many
benefits of cross training for both the individual and the organization. Generally,
cross training programs that are aligned with the Library's strategic plan,
lead to better coordination and teamwork and a fundamental understanding of
organizational goals and objectives. This type of program will play a critical
role as staff members assume more diverse roles and are expected to make informed
decisions in their work.

Here are the topics we feel are important to resolve during the course of our
working together:
· How does cross training impact labor grade level?
· Concern on cross training across library system and relevance
to current job
· Back fill for person being cross trained?
· Can the cross-training program include tutorial making?
