Technical Services

Catalog and Metadata Services, the Cataloging Training Subcommittee of the Joint Departmental Committee (STOD/JDC) and Sterling Memorial Library (SML) Acquisitions, provide training on an irregular basis for all appropriate Yale University Library (YUL) staff. For the most part, workshops are developed when new technical procedures or complex cataloging rules are introduced for the first time. Exceptionally, the Cataloging Training Subcommittee has been principally concerned with maintaining basic cataloging knowledge for library clerical and technical staff (C&Ts), and Catalog and Metadata Services NACO training is used to introduce new professionals to the national name authority control workflow and procedures.

Workshops in technical services are offered through Library Human Resources (LHR)

In addition to the classes offered through LHR, links to previously offered workshops in the individual areas within technical services are provided below. Supervisors are free to use the materials to train individual staff and staff is free to use the materials for review.

Catalog and Metadata Services

Catalog and Metadata Services (CMS) catalogs material in all formats in roman-script, Hebrew, and African languages acquired by Sterling Memorial Library, Beinecke Library, YUL science libraries, and the Arts Library. The department provides library-wide training for:

  • NACO policies and procedures
  • Introductory continuing education workshops developed by the American Library Association (ALA) and the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) such as Basic Subject Cataloging Using LCSH (Library of Congress Subject headings)
  • new national cataloging policies, such as the AACR2 (Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, Second Edition) amendments, the CONSER (Cooperative Online Serials) standard record
  • new YUL cataloging policies, such as core-level cataloging and volume holdings standards
  • new cataloging-specific software (Cataloger’s Desktop, MacroExpress technical services macros, OCLC Connexion)
