CIESIN: Consortium for International Earth Science

The Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) was established in 1989 as an independent non-governmental organization to provide information that
would help scientists, decision-makers, and the public better understand the changing relationship
between human beings and the environment. In 1998, CIESIN became a center within Columbia University's
Earth Institute. The
SEDAC Gateway provides search access to numerous catalogs, such
as the SEDAC (Socioeconomic Data & Applications Center) catalog and over 40 other federal,
regional and state level and international catalogs. Together, these catalogs
contain thousands of metadata records from both the social and earth sciences.
The Gateway search supports free text, temporal and spatial searching.
The SEDAC Gateway also supports searching of a select number of full-text resources; Model Visualization of Integrated Assessments of
Climate Change; Environmental Treaties and Resource Indicators;
Stratospheric Ozone and Human Health
Macroeconomics and Growth, World Bank
- Examines the relationship between national policies and economic growth. Site contains abstracts
of published articles and working papers. Associated data sets can be downloaded directly in compressed
Excel and Lotus formats, along with information on the data codings.
FAOSTAT database,
Food & Agriculture Organization
- Data collection from the FAO covering crops and livestock production,
trade, commodity balance, population, and land use.
Foreign Labor Statistics
- This WWW site offers direct access to over 200 series of labor statistics,
including price, compensation,
labor cost, employment and unemployment data for the countries of the world.
The section Most
Requested Statistics offers country-level access to 8 of the labor statistics series. The
section Get Detailed Statistics offers detailed
series by keyword, country and year(s)with several output options.
International Data Base, U.S. Census Bureau
- This data collection is a compilation of demographic and socio-economic data created in the
US Census Bureau's International Programs Center. This WWW site offers two features: 1)
selected demographic data by country can be directly accessed, or 2) the entire contents of
the International Data Base can be retrieved from this site to your computer. The program
requires 40 MB of hard disk storage and takes about 2 hours to transfer via FTP. It comes
with menu driven software allowing the user to customize the information search and output.
National Bureau of Economic Research
- This site offers online data: Penn-World Tables, Mark 5.6, Business Cycle Dating, the NBER
Macro History Database (with over 3500 monthly, quarterly, or annual economic time-series).
Peace Science Society, (Pennsylvania State University)
- The Peace Science Society (International) is a scientific association of individuals
developing theory and methods for the study of peace, located at Pennsylvania
State University. The Society distributes selected data sets in ZIP format.
United Nations InfoNation
- InfoNation data, drawn from the United Nations
Statistics Division, allows the user, through a frames-based interface,
to select up to seven of 185 countries and four of 37 variables. Retrieval is
for the latest year available only, providing a snapshot view of country information.
United Nations Statistics Division Common Database
- UNSTATS provides selected series from 30 specialized
international data sources for all available countries and areas.
United Nations Surveys on Crime Trends and the Operations of Criminal Justice Systems,
United Nations Crime and Justice Information Network.
- The European Institute for Crime Prevention and Control,
affiliated with the United Nations (HEUNI) has carried out an European
and North American analysis of the United Nations Crime Surveys
covering years 1975 - 1994. The analysis has resulted in 7 publications.
The report on the Fifth United Nations Survey differs considerably from
its predecessors. Data have been supplemented by other information sources,
including in particular the results of the International Crime (Victim) Survey.

Social Science Data Archive
- The Social Science Data Archive at Yale University holds numerous datasets.
relevant to the study of the U.N. system. To locate a specific data set, search the
StatCat, the catalog for the
Social Science Data Archive.
Yale datasets are received from the Inter-University Consortium for
Political and Social Research and directly from the International
Monetary Fund, OECD, and the World Bank. These datasets,
restricted to Yale faculty, staff, and students, are available on the Yale network and on the computers at Yale's Social Science Statistical
Laboratory.

Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research,
University of Michigan
- ICPSR (Inter-University Consortium for Political and
Social Research) is located at the Institute for Social Research in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
The world's largest repository of computer-readable social science data, the ICPSR acquires,
processes, and distributes data collections on a broad range of topics.
The Consortium's 400 member institutions may obtain any of these data collections, generally
at no charge; nonaffiliated researchers may also use the data, after paying an access
fee. The Yale University representative is Julie Linden at the
