Image of Horace Walpole in his libraryArtist: George Perfect Harding (d. 1853) after Johann Heinrich Müntz (1727-1798)

Title: Horace Walpole in his Library

Description: Ink and wash

In 1756 Walpole commissioned Müntz to paint the original version of this portrait where he is similarly seated in the library with his spaniel Rosette at his side. The library was designed by John Chute early in 1754 and by the Christmas holidays of that year Walpole was placing books on its shelves.

Among the collections at the Lewis Walpole Library are the majority of traceable volumes from Walpole's own library as well as many prints, drawings, and watercolors showing Strawberry Hill views and designs.
