The Lewis Walpole Library is open to scholars and research visitors who wish to use the rare and primary source materials in the collections. The Library is open by appointment Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:45 p.m. throughout the year (excluding University holidays). Tuesdays the Library is open from 9 a.m. until 4:45 p.m.

The Lewis Walpole Library is a non-circulating, closed-stack library. Rare books, manuscripts, prints, and drawings may be consulted only in the Reading Room.

Reading privileges are granted to registered readers, subject to the following:

  1. Library users are asked to fill out a registration card and present one form of identification with a recent photograph and a current address.
  2. Readers are asked to leave personal belongings (coats, hats, briefcases, bags) in the lockers provided. Loose papers may not be brought into the Reading Room. The Library reserves the right to inspect all items upon removal from the Reading Room and building.
  3. All material in the Library must be handled with great care. Library materials must remain on the reading room table, and foam supports should be used for books. Only pencils - no pens or markers - may be used in the Reading Room. Paper for note-taking will be provided by the Library. Readers are welcome to use laptop computers and flash drives.
  4. The main Library is equipped with 802.11 b/g wireless access throughout the building. 10 Mb Ethernet connections are also available in the Reading Room and other public areas. A public PC is located in the Reading Room as well as a monochrome laser printer. Wireless USB adapters are available on a limited basis for laptops not equipped for wireless.
  5. To request materials, readers should fill out a paging slip for each item. The quantity of materials readers may page at any one time is limited. Paging is available from 8:30 a.m. - 12 noon and from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.
  6. Readers are requested not to remove cards from the catalog drawers or drawers from the cabinets.
  7. Readers are requested to return prints, drawings, and manuscript materials in their original order.
  8. The Library will, upon request, make reproductions for personal study and research. Depending upon the format and age of the material, the Library may either photocopy or digitally photograph the item requested. Any photoduplication is subject to approval. Readers may not take digital images themselves.
  9. Cell phones should be turned to silent or vibrate mode, and calls should be taken and made outside the Reading Room.
  10. Please be aware that video surveillance is used in the Reading Room and other areas of the Library. Video and circulation records are retained permanently.
  11. Food and beverages are not permitted in the Library.
  12. The Library is a non-smoking facility.
