Policies and Ordering Instructions
To assist scholars in their research, the Library is able to offer limited photoduplication services: digital images, microfilm, and copyflo. Readers must identify and select all material for duplication. Please be aware that the Library can fill orders only as the demands of serving our patrons permit, and that some materials may be too fragile to be subjected to any duplication process. A $25.00 fee will be added to any request requiring special handling.
Typically, an order will take four to six weeks to process from the time payment is received. Orders requiring original photography for publication will take longer. For orders required sooner, rush charges will apply. Any order that requires the staff to spend more than 30 minutes on bibliographic research or 60 minutes preparing the material for duplication will be subject to preparation fees of $25 per hour. For service to commercial users a separate fee may be applied.
The Library provides images in digital format. If no master digital file exists, the price for reproductions will include the cost of making one. The master becomes the property of the Library. All reproductions (of whatever nature) are provided for readers' individual scholarly use.
Permission to Publish. Provision of a photoduplicate is not an authorization to publish. The Library cannot grant or deny permission to publish texts or images unless Yale University is identified as the copyright holder. If the text or image in question is under copyright, permission to publish should be sought from the owners of the rights, typically the creator or the heirs to his or her estate. The Lewis Walpole Library should, however, be cited as the source with the following credit line: "Courtesy of The Lewis Walpole Library, Yale University."
Warning Concerning Copyright Restrictions
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproductions. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research."
The Library reserves the right to refuse to accept an order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
Advance payment by check, Visa, or MasterCard is required for all orders. Please make checks payable to the Lewis Walpole Library. Overseas customers paying by check must send payment in U.S. dollars drawn on a United States bank.
