Italian Studies Web : Information for Selectors

Dear colleagues,

Thank you for volunteering to contribute to the Western European Specialists Section (WESS) Italian Studies Web! It is only because of the work of volunteer selectors like you that this nationwide effort can be successful. Furthermore, by contributing to the Italian Studies Web, you are part of a larger project that involves also Iberian Studies, French Studies, Germanic Studies, Scandinavian Studies, and Low Country Studies. Connect to the main WESSWEB site to find more information about these projects and WESS.

When you start selecting, keep in mind the aim of this Web site: we are not striving for exhaustiveness but rather for quality. We hope to become the major Italian Studies Web site for scholars, students and our own colleagues. When you select, select for this audience. Take some time to explore the existing pages on the French Studies Web to get a better sense of the type of resources we try to select.

As an Italian Studies Web selector you could target a specific subject within Italian Studies or transgress the disciplinary boundaries.

There are a variety of volunteer levels:

  1. Send me by e-mail HTML marked up files that contain your contributions (links to resources and possibly annotations).
  2. Send me by e-mail the ASCII files that contain your contributions (URLs and titles of the resources, and possibly annotations).
  3. Send me by e-mail URLs (and try to give me some extra information).

Obviously, I would prefer you to be a #1 volunteer, it makes it easier on me, of course. But there really is little difference between volunteer level #2 and #1. Once you have the HTML basics under your belt, it will take as much time to create an ASCII file as it would be to create an HTML file.

If you haven't yet tried marking up a text in HTML, take an hour to go through Kurt De Belder's basic HTML workshop and you will realize that HTML is EASY. So invest an hour or two of your time into HTML and learn a new marketable skill! Accidently, a very good way to learn more about HTML is to look at the source files [showing the HTML markup] of some of the better marked up pages [e.g on Netscape, this option is listed in the 'View' menu, under 'Source'; on Mosaic, the option is listed in the 'File' menu, under 'Document source'].

Important:

How do I volunteer?

with your name, e-mail address, job title, institutional affiliation (this will appear in the credits) and possibly your area of expertise and focus ... and start mailing me your contributions!

Once again, thank you and I am looking forward to collaborating with you.
