Lexikon Deutsch-Jüdischer Autoren: Archiv Bibliographia Judaica, Vol. 1, 1992-. (Complete in 16 vols.). ISBN 3598226802. 228DM per volume.
A wonderful research tool with a wealth of information. The concept of “Autoren” is intended to be all encompassing: in her ‘Vorwort’, Renate Heuer states that “der Begriff Autor wurde im Wortsinn des lateinischen ‘auctor’ definiert, und es wurden in die Namenkartei des Archivs alle deutschsprachigen Juden aufgenommen, die als Schriftsteller, Wissenschaftler, Künstler order Personen des öffentlichen Lebens knapp zweihundert Jahre deutscher Kulturgeschichte mitgeprägt haben.” A typical article gives personal information (dates, parents, spouse); precise information about education; ‘Berufliche Stationen’, dissertation, postgraduate positions, emigration information, research areas, professional positions held, awards; circle of friends; political engagement with names of organizations and quotations; zionistic engagement; ‘Stellung zum Judentum’ illustrated with quotations; listing of journals to which the author has contributed; listings of ‘Einzelbeiträge’, ‘Gespräche u. Diskussionsprotokolle’; listing of ‘Nachlass’, letters and archives; extensive listing of secondary literature (Sammelbände, Einzelveröfftentlichungen, Dissertationen, Biographien, Bibliographien, etc.); a very to fairly complete listing of primary literature with quotations illustrating certain positions taken or ideas developed. For example, Theodor Adorno is treated in about 22 densely printed pages (82-103); Günther Anders in 8 pages (159-167); Hannah Arendt in 18 pages (169-187); Erich Auerbach in 5 pages (245-249). The articles are clearly directed to the specialized researcher, not to someone who wants to obtain a 1-page bio or a short overview of ideas. [KDB]

The holdings of the Archiv der sozialen Demokratie are not included and will be part of a separate publication. The inventory is organized by personality offering biographical information and covers the holdings of the different archives.     Written by distinguished scholars, the 22 papers from a colloquium here describe the state of research in medieval history as practiced in France over the past quarter-century. The range of sub-fields is inclusive — from the traditional (social, economic, political intellectual, and auxiliary sciences of history) to the new (mentalities, archeology, anthropology, l’informatique). Geographical coverage is also broad — from the Turkish world and Africa to the familiar regions of Europe. Biographical notes about the authors and an index to authors cited complete the work. The greatest advances of this fertile generation, according to Duby, are found in archeology, historiography, and the auxiliary sciences. [SFR]
