Our esteemed [sic] editor is anxious that a correction to James H. Spohrer's last piece as editor of this column be announced and an apology be issued to Timothy Shipe, who just happened to have attended a conference last August in Princeton on electronic texts. The scribal error in rendering his name occurred because Spohrer was listening to a Bach piece conducted by Timothy Shaw at the time! Invoking Bach as the excuse, Jim Spohrer (and Jeffry Larson, I'm sure) both hope that Mr. Shipe can forgive the error.
Many thanks to those who answered my recent plea for news and information for inclusion in this issue of the Newsletter. Susanne Roberts, of Yale's Sterling Memorial Library reports that as Chair of the Medieval Academy of America's Committee on Library Preservation (and also the Commission on Preservation and Access's Scholarly Advisory Committee on Preservation), she will be appearing as a panelist in a plenary session on “The Electronic Medievalist” at the Medieval Academy's annual meeting in Tucson AZ, April 1-3, 1993. She expects to speak about digitization both as a preservation technique and a means of making texts more easily available to scholars. In addition, this Committee will be sponsoring a session, which she will chair, on “Medieval Libraries: Creation and Destruction” at the 28th International Congress on Medieval Studies in Kalamazoo MI, May 6-9, 1993. Four papers will consider German, Spanish and Austrian libraries.
Tony Angiletta became Director of Collections at Stanford on November 1, 1992 in which position he had been acting since January 1, 1992. His primary responsibilities revolve around leading and administering the Collection Development Program of the Stanford University Libraries which encompasses some 13 libraries, including the main research library, Green, and the $7 million materials budget; representing Stanford nationally; maintaining the expanding cooperative collection development arrangements with other institutions such as UC and having the primary role in donor relations and fundraising for the collections. Tony has been Curator for the Social Sciences since 1988 and will continue in this role until a search is completed for his replacement. He will continue to be responsible for West European social sciences and hence will, he says, remain a WESSer [or is that WESSie?]. He wryly comments that this will, of course, create the situation where, as bibliographer, he reports to a person who reports to him.....
Reinhart Sonnenburg brings to our attention the appearance of the 3rd revised edition of Jim Campbell's “Directory of German Specialists in North American Libraries” which has just come out and is being distributed by members of the Germanists Discussion Group. Everyone listed in the directory will receive a copy. Others who want to obtain the directory should contact Reinhart Sonnenburg, Classics, German, etc, Librarian, Ohio State University, Columbus, OH 43210 (e-mail:sonnenburg.1@osu.edu) for the paper copy, or Jim Campbell (jmc@poe.acc.virginia.edu) for the machine readable version.
James Spohrer reports that the Library at Berkeley has received a Title VI grant in the Foreign Periodicals Program for approximately $45,000 to collect little-held serials in four areas: Slavic and East European Studies, Africana, East Asian Studies and German Studies. He intends to purchase subscriptions and backfiles for some 60 German journals, chosen largely from among small and alternative presses publishing in the fields of contemporary history and politics, philosophy, public policy and culture. The period of the grant is October 1992 through September 1993, and recipients are eligible to request renewal of the grants for two additional years.
