Joint WESS/SEES Program in New Orleans

By Richard Hacken (UPB), Program Committee Chair

The Western European Specialists, in cooperation with the Slavic and East European Section, will present a program on Monday, June 28, 1993 entitled “Europe East and West: New Resources for North American Libraries.” Note the beginning time: 9:00 a.m. Look for the specific locale in Cajunville to be announced in the ALA Conference Program.

This program will focus on the documentation of recent, historic events in both Eastern and Western Europe. New resources relevant to, and in many cases arising from these events will be discussed: the dissolution of the Soviet bloc and the rise of independent states, German unification, European Community integration efforts, etc. Speakers will suggest modes of access to information from previously inaccessible archives, from microform, book, and electronic resources.

The first speaker, Edward Kasinec, Chief of the Slavic and Baltic Division, New York Public Library, will speak on “New Resources from Eastern Europe.” The second speaker will be our own Sem Sutter, Bibliographer for Western European Languages and Literatures, University of Chicago, speaking on “New Resources from Western Europe.” The third speaker, Michael Miller, Germans from Russia Bibliographer, North Dakota State University, will speak on “New Resources on Germans from Russia.” Finally, Norman Ross, President of Norman Ross Publishing, will be our discussant. General discussion of the program topic and the annual WESS business meeting will follow the program presentation.

So, in short, if you're interested in Czeching out the Slovaks, hearing a Serb-blurb, knowing why a rolling Stasi gathers no mossy and whether the EC is p.c., or where Lawrence Welk's accordion and Eva Braun's molars now reside, then be front row center at the WESS program in New Orleans.
