940 Location Fields Updated

I am pleased to announce that the Systems Office has completed running an
innovative program to update the 940 location fields. The 940 field is a
local field created and maintained in order to provide location searching in
the online public catalog (LUCY).

Last week we updated the 940 field in 3,503,066 bibliographic records in
Orbis. The program corrected errors by comparing the values in the
940 field with the locations in Copy Holdings records. The program also
expanded the 940 values to include *all* sml locations which were
previously not included in the 940 field. The 940 program will be run
routinely during the third week of every month.

The 940 field can be used with keyword searching to qualify a search by
location. Use the search label '.loc.' or the search label '.940.'
Below are examples of keyword searches that can be used with the 940 field.

1. k=color and art.loc.

This search will pull up all materials with the primary location of 'art'
(e.g., art; art, birr; art,lck1; etc.) and any with a secondary location of
art, (e.g., mudd,art).

2. k=color and ref.loc.

This search will pull up all library material with the secondary location
'ref'
(sml,ref; ast,ref; art,ref).

3. k=color and art ref?.loc.

This search will pull up all secondary locations beginning 'art, ref'
('art, ref'; 'art,refb'; 'art,refc' etc.)

4. k=geo ref.loc.

This search will pull up all 453 works in 'geo, ref', the Geology reference
collection.

5. k=phosphorus and (ksl or geo).loc.

This search will pull up materials located either in Kline or Geology.

6. To create a boolean 'and' condition, use two separate location search
statements joined by the 'and' operator:

k=knowledge and ssl.loc. and ccl.loc.

This search will pull up all 'knowledge' records that are held both in
Social Sciences and CCL.
