This Old Library (13 July 1998)
SML BOOK STACK RENOVATION
The stone carver has returned to Sterling this week to prepare for the
installation of the donor plaque in the Exhibition Corridor and to finish
the Franke inscription outside the Periodical Reading Room. Within the
reading room, metal grills for the windows will be refinished this week.
Proper ventilation will be used for this work, but some odor may be
noticed. Plumbers and sprinkler fitters are working in the machine room
below the reading room.
On Monday through Wednesday, wooden base boards and chair rails will be
installed in the corridor to the York Street entrance. Similar baseboards
will also be installed adjacent to the two elevators on all floors of the
book stacks.
We expect to have the book stack dumbwaiters inspected this week and
returned to service. The conduit for the book stack emergency phones will
be roughed in by 24 July, after which Yale Telecommunications will install
the actual devices.
NEW MUSIC LIBRARY
On the 4th floor extension, sheet metal workers and electricians are
completing the installation of the fans needed for the new HVAC unit, which
will be started up on Wednesday. The debugging of the new unit will no
doubt take several days. Sprinkler fitters also continue their work on
the 4th floor this week.
On the 3rd floor, workers will continue all week to install the new drywall
ceiling. On the 2nd floor, the plasterer will continue work on the ceiling
all week, using the moving staging described last week. Somewhat more than
25% of the 2nd floor ceiling has now been plastered.
Electricians will be wiring the fire alarm system this week on the stairway
at the northwest corner of the building. This is the stairway that serves
the Sterling Spoon.
Sprinkler fitters will be working on 1M adjacent to the Sterling Spoon this
week. The women's rest room outside the Sterling Spoon will be closed
Monday and Tuesday to accommodate this work. The rest room on the 3rd
floor, near the elevator lobby, remains closed this week. Staff may use
the newly renovated rest rooms immediately next to the elevators and on
most mezzanine levels of the book stacks as alternatives.
On Monday and Tuesday, crews will be plastering the new soffits installed
in the corridor at the far north end of the Acquisitions department. Crews
installing the ceiling tiles will follow them.
Refurbished gates for the loading dock will be delivered tomorrow and
installed on Tuesday and Wednesday. We expect to have the loading dock
back in service by Thursday. The drywall ceiling for the new emergency
egress hallway between the Music Library and the loading dock will be
installed on Tuesday.
The demolition of the west wall of the Newspaper Reading Room will take
another two days. This will permit the installation of new sprinkler pipes
on that side of the room, as has been done on the east side of the room.
Sheet metal workers will be installing new ductwork in the Conservation
Studio this week.
Crews have begun to install the tile flooring in the basement of the new
Music Library and in the stack area of the mezzanine. Some slight odor
from this work may be noticed.
