Catalog Librarian/Slavic Cataloging Team Leader

The University and the Library

The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching and
research at the University, has more than 10 million volumes housed in the
Sterling Memorial Library and 16 school and department libraries.  It
employs a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly 500 FTE who have the
opportunity to work with the highest caliber of faculty and students, to
participate on committees and to be involved in other areas of staff
development.  A full spectrum of library resources, from rare books and
manuscripts to a rapidly expanding network of electronic resources,
constitutes one of Yale's distinctive strengths.  The Library is engaged in
numerous ambitious projects such as the renovation of the main library
building, the complete conversion of the Library's catalog including
collections in non-roman alphabets, and various automation projects which
include network access to scholarly information and preservation imaging.

Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the Chief Catalog Librarian, the Catalog
Librarian/Team Leader for Slavic materials manages the Slavic Cataloging
Team and provides original cataloging for Slavic and East European language
materials.  Oversees the work of two professional and three support staff,
including hiring, training, and supervision.  Manages team workflow and the
Slavic cataloging backlog.  Works closely with the Slavic curator to insure
co-ordination of the acquisitions and cataloging functions, and to
implement a system of cataloging priorities to support user needs.
Cataloging responsibilities include responsibility for materials in Slavic
and East European languages in all physical formats and subject areas.
Provides descriptive cataloging with full MARC content designation
according to national standards.  Yale is a member of the Program for
Cooperative Cataloging and contributes NACO records to the national
authority file.  Keeps abreast of revisions in cataloging rules and trends,
and applies new rules, interpretations and techniques as appropriate.
Performs subject analysis and classification in accordance with Library of
Congress schemes.  Participates in Catalog Department management, continual
assessment, training and development.

The libraries have recently undertaken a retrospective conversion project
to convert approximately 2.5 million titles over the next four years.  The
Slavic Catalog Team Leader will be responsible for analyzing past practices
with regards to Slavic and East European materials and assisting the
Catalog Management Librarian in developing a model for the retrospective
conversion of non-roman Slavic language materials.

The Slavic Catalog Librarian/Team Leader serves on committees, participates
in library planning activities, and is expected to be active professionally.

Qualifications

Master's degree in library science from an ALA-accredited library school,
and an undergraduate or graduate degree in a field related to Slavic
studies.  Five years professional cataloging experience, preferably in an
academic research library, working with bibliographic and authority records
in an automated library system. Fluency in at least one cyrillic Slavic
language and demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multitude of
Slavic and East European languages.  Supervisory experience, including
hiring, training, evaluating, and supervising the work of staff and
monitoring productivity and quality of work.  Excellent analytical and
problem solving skills.  Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Strong computer skills, including experience with personal computer
hardware and software, bibliographic services such as RLIN and OCLC, and
network-based tools.  Demonstrated ability to work well independently and
with others at a wide range of organizational levels and in a rapidly
changing and demanding environment.  Desirable qualifications include:
working knowledge of Hungarian, working knowledge of retrospective
conversion issues. 

Salary and Benefits

Salary from a minimum of 41,300.  Comprehensive benefits package including
22 vacation days; 17 holiday, recess and personal days; health care;
