THE UNIVERSITY AND MEDICAL LIBRARIES:

The Yale University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching
and research at the University, has more than 10.5 million volumes housed
in the Sterling Memorial Library and 16 school and department libraries.
It employs a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly 600 FTE who have the
opportunity to work with the highest caliber of faculty and students,
participate on committees and are involved in other areas of staff
development.  A full spectrum of library resources, from rare books and
manuscripts to a rapidly expanding network of electronic resources,
constitutes one of Yale's distinctive strengths.  The Library is engaged in
numerous ambitious projects such as the renovation of the main library
building, the complete retrospective conversion of the Library's catalog,
and various automation projects, which include network access to scholarly
information and preservation imaging.

The Harvey Cushing / John Hay Whitney Medical Library, with a collection of
400,000 volumes and a wide range of state-of the art electronic services,
serves the Yale Schools of Medicine, Public Health, Nursing, the Yale-New
Haven Hospital and other affiliated institutions of the Yale-New Haven
Medical Center.  Library staff work together as a team to provide
responsive and effective information support to the Medical Center's
missions of research, education, and patient care.  There is a continuing
effort to use technology fully to facilitate patron access to information
from either library, campus, or remote locations.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Reference Librarian I at the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library is
responsible for a constellation of significant public services tasks and
responsibilities in the dynamic and challenging academic, research, and
clinical care setting of the Yale /New Haven Medical Center. In addition,
medical information is provided to all of Yale University's academic and
research units. Duties include, but are not limited to, scheduled reader
assistance and training at points of use inside or outside the Medical
Library, educational program development and participation, print and
electronic production of usage guides and publicity, content and interface
development of the Library web site, and collection development
responsibilities for print, electronic, and internet resources. As a member
of the Reference Services Department, the reference librarian functions in
a collegial, teamwork-oriented environment which includes both a customer
service philosophy and anticipation of user concerns and demands for
exemplary library reference and research services. Participation in Medical
School and Library committees and task forces on scholarly resources or
services. Participation in Yale Library campus-wide, regional, and national
professional development and collaborative activities. Documented
accomplishment and satisfactory job performance evaluation required for
future promotion to Librarian II.


QUALIFICATIONS:

M.L.S. from an ALA-accredited library school.  Emphasis on public services
library training and experience; experience in a health or life science
library is preferred. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
strong public services orientation.  Must have the ability to work with
varied user groups and function effectively in a team environment and in a
complex organization. Demonstrated ability in utilizing and instructing in
the use of information technologies. Demonstrated experience using
microcomputers and information productivity applications, including basic
hypertext markup language (HTML). The names and contact information from a

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

Full benefits package including 22 vacation days; 17 holiday, recess and
