THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY
The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching and
research at the University, has more than 10 million volumes housed in the
Sterling Memorial Library and 16 school and department libraries.  It
employs a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly 500 FTE who have the
opportunity to work with the highest caliber of faculty and students, to
participate on committees and to be involved in other areas of staff
development.  A full spectrum of library resources, from rare books and
manuscripts to a rapidly expanding network of electronic resources,
constitutes one of Yale's distinctive strengths.  The Library is engaged in
numerous ambitious projects such as the renovation of the main library
building, the complete conversion of the Library's catalog including
collections in non-roman alphabets, and various automation projects which
include network access to scholarly information and preservation imaging.


RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the general direction of the Arts & Sciences Team Leader, creates,
enhances, and maintains cataloging records at a Windows-based cataloger's
workstation for a wide range of print and non-print materials in both
English and in other European and African languages for both Sterling
Memorial Library and other outside libraries in the Yale system. Provides
descriptive cataloging with full MARC content designation according to
national standards and the requirements of Yale's local online system.
Keeps abreast of revisions in cataloging rules and trends and applies new
rules, interpretations, and techniques as appropriate.  Assigns subject
headings and other access points based on Library of Congress standards and
local practice and assigns call numbers.  May assist the team expert user
in implementing changes to the library's online system. Creates authority
records for NACO. May train and revise the work of students, cataloging
assistants, and other librarians.  Participates actively in the Library's
management, assessment, training, and development programs. Contributes to
implementing the mission of the Library and is expected to be active
professionally.  Performs similar duties as assigned or required.


QUALIFICATIONS:
MLS from an ALA-accredited library science program. Strong reading
knowledge of two or more European languages.  Strong communication and
analytical skills.  Ability to work independently and with others.  Ability
to excel in a rapidly-changing automated team environment.  Familiarity
with AACR2, Library of Congress rule interpretations and subject heading
practice, and MARC format.  Strong computer skills, including experience
with personal computer hardware and software, bibliographic services such
as RLIN and OCLC, and network-based tools desirable.
