Reminder: E-Book Forums

Reminder: the first talk is next Monday.

The Collection Development Council is pleased to announce two forums on
electronic books:

o April 10th, 10:30 - 12 noon, SML Lecture Hall

CAN YOU TELL A BOOK BY ITS COVER? ELECTRONIC BOOKS AND THE FUTURE OF THE
BOOK INDUSTRY
Ann Okerson, Associate University Librarian
Don Waters, Program Officer, Scholarly Communication, Andrew W. Mellon
Foundation

>From their complementary perspectives as close observers of and
participants in the digital world, the two speakers will address emerging
trends in the book and publishing industries, trends that are profoundly
affecting and transforming traditional scholarly, professional, trade, and
popular books as we know them, from printed artifacts to electronic source
files that can be output in numerous ways, depending on the needs and
desires of readers. Hear who the players are, what they are doing, and
when these events will change the way in which Yale library staff approach
their work.

o April 24th, 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Room 102, Linsly-Chittenden Hall

ELECTRONIC BOOKS: STATE OF THE ART IN STANDARDS, DEVICES, AND TECHNOLOGIES
Ken Brooks, Director, Barnes & Noble New Media and colleagues

This will be a rare opportunity for all library staff and friends of the
library to participate in an introductory hands-on tutorial about
electronic books. You will hear about the various hand-held book devices
streaming into the marketplace and how they work; handle them; learn about
emerging softwares and standards that are making it easy and desirable for
readers to carry hundreds of books conveniently on one small device, to
search them, and to integrate their contents into their studies. Mr.
Brooks will describe the work of his division at B&N and his vision for
books that never go out of print. He will be joined by colleagues who
involved in parallel projects and software development.

This is a special opportunity, not to be missed!
